‘The Devotion of Suspect X’ vs ‘Drishyam’: The Perfect Alibi Meets the Perfect Double Crime

A neighbor builds the alibi in Higashino's novel; in Drishyam, a family does. Here is how the two cover-up stories differ, and what the sources can and cannot confirm.

Both stories turn on a murder that an ordinary person helps hide, but they put the cover-up in different hands. In Keigo Higashino’s novel The Devotion of Suspect X, the person who builds the alibi is a neighbor. In Drishyam, the Malayalam film, the concealment is a family’s. Scroll’s 2015 comparison argues that Drishyam selectively draws on the novel, keeping the broad mechanism of a hidden killing while changing what the concealment is for. That reading is the spine of this article.

The two stories in brief

The Devotion of Suspect X (2005 novel)

The novel is part of Higashino’s Galileo series. Its setup centers on Yasuko, whose ex-husband turns up unexpectedly, and on a puzzling investigation led by Detective Kusanagi. The neighbor, Ishigami, is the figure who constructs the alibis that keep the investigation from reaching the people it is aimed at. An independent Higashino reference describes the suspense as moving past the question of who did it toward the human cost of the defense that follows.

Drishyam

Scroll describes Drishyam as a family-centered cover-up. Its emotional focus is a family man and his wife and daughter, and the film’s tension comes from what they will do to protect one another. The helper of the novel becomes, in this account, the family itself.

Where the comparison holds and where it breaks

The table separates the points that the cited sources support directly from the points where the comparison is an interpretation.

Axis The Devotion of Suspect X Drishyam Basis for the comparison
Who conceals the crime A neighbor, Ishigami, builds the alibis A family covers up the crime Scroll’s contrast; the novel’s side is from the publisher’s synopsis and the Korean Film Council account
Where the story’s energy sits The logic of the alibi and the investigation that tests it The family’s day-to-day effort to keep the secret Scroll’s reading; no scene-by-scene analysis is offered by these sources
Emotional center The human stakes behind the logical construction A family man, his wife and his daughter A summary of the cited descriptions, not a claim that the characters play identical roles
Relationship to the source The original Selectively drawn from the novel, per Scroll Scroll’s account; the rights history is not covered here

The strongest shared element is the premise that a person outside the crime takes responsibility for keeping it hidden. The divergence is one of emphasis. The novel makes the defense itself the intellectual puzzle, while the film makes the family’s bond the thing that has to survive the investigation.

What changes in adaptation: the Perfect Number evidence

The clearest documented account of how a screen version can reshape the source comes from a different film. In a Korean Film Council interview from 2012, Pang Eun-jin, director of Perfect Number, says she deliberately shifted the source story’s emphasis away from its battle of wits and toward the relationship between the characters Seok-go and Hwa-seon. She describes the film as melodrama at its core, and offers this line:

“I would say melodrama is the backbone of the film.”

Pang also characterizes the relationship in the source as one-sided, and says her version makes it reciprocal. That account concerns Perfect Number only. It shows one adaptation strategy, not how Drishyam was made, and it should not be read as evidence about the Malayalam film.

Which edition of the novel to read

The English-language edition listed by Hachette India is an Abacus paperback of 448 pages, published 2 February 2012, with ISBN 9780349123745. Those details apply to that listed edition; other printings and translations may differ. The publisher’s copy describes the book as a crime and mystery thriller and calls it “one of the biggest-selling Japanese thrillers ever.” That is promotional wording with no sales figure, date or source attached, so it should be read as marketing rather than a measured claim.

What this comparison does and does not establish

  • It rests on Scroll’s 2015 reading of Drishyam‘s relationship to the novel. Treat that reading as an informed critical account, not as a documented legal or rights history.
  • No rights documentation, production history or creator statement from Higashino or a rights holder is cited here, so the exact legal status of the adaptation relationship remains unestablished.
  • The sources provide no full scene-by-scene comparison of the novel and Drishyam. Claims about individual scenes should be checked against the films and the book directly.
  • The Korean Film Council material concerns Perfect Number, not Drishyam.
  • No current streaming or rental availability is claimed. Catalogues differ by country and change over time, so check local listings before watching.

The comparison works best as a lens: the same cover-up engine, driven by a stranger in one story and by a family in the other.
