Yes, for viewers who want political cinema that works through a family rather than around it. Mohammad Rasoulof’s The Seed of the Sacred Fig (2024) makes the authority of a state official at work into the pressure inside his own home. Its central question is whether the household conflict and the political argument deepen one another as the film moves toward thriller territory, or whether they simply run side by side.
What the film is about
The story follows Iman, an examining magistrate in Tehran. His gun goes missing just as demonstrations erupt across the city, and the disappearance turns suspicion into something that moves through his household. Cannes’ 2024 festival account places the missing gun at the centre of the premise. Film at Lincoln Center describes the core conflict as a widening wedge between Iman and his progressive daughters. That phrasing is useful: the family is not a backdrop to the politics but the place where the political disagreement is worked out.

Domestic drama or paranoia thriller?
The strongest description, drawn from Film at Lincoln Center, is that the film works as both a “paranoia thriller” and a domestic drama. Each register has its own job, and the film’s effectiveness depends on how the two hand off to each other.
The domestic drama
The family begins as close-knit, and the film’s emotional weight comes from watching that closeness erode. The daughters’ response to the protests and to the repression that follows pulls them away from their father. Because Iman holds official power, the daughters’ dissent is not just a generational disagreement. It is a challenge to the authority he exercises both at work and at home.

The missing gun and the thriller pivot
The gun gives the story a concrete object to search for. A missing weapon can be investigated, questioned and suspected, which lets private unease become a plot with stakes. The thriller mechanics are therefore not decoration: they convert the family’s distrust into something that can be acted on.
The critical question is whether that escalation arrives as a consequence of the characters’ positions or as a device that overrides them. A viewer who finds the second half driven by plot rather than by the family’s fractures will read the film differently from one who sees the suspense as the natural outcome of the household’s strain.
Authority at home and in the state
The film’s most distinctive argument is structural. An examining magistrate’s job is to assess evidence and assign responsibility on the state’s behalf. When that same habit of suspicion is turned on his own family, the film suggests that the logic of state power does not stay in the courtroom or the office. It enters the house and reshapes how a father relates to his children.
This reading is an interpretation of the film’s setup rather than a claim the film spells out, but the setup supports it. The political setting is not an abstract background; it is the pressure that makes the family’s internal conflict possible.

The Directors Guild of America states that the film was shot entirely in secret and combines a fictional narrative with real images of protests violently suppressed by Iranian authorities. The DGA’s framing matters for how the film should be read: the form carries the risks and realities surrounding the story rather than only recreating them.
Fiction and documentary images do different work. The real footage establishes what the state did in the streets; the fictional scenes show what that violence does to one household. The trade-off is that the switch between registers can heighten urgency, but a viewer who expects a seamless fictional world may find the transitions abrupt. Viewers should decide for themselves whether the blend strengthens the film’s argument or disrupts its tone.
Runtime and version
Listings for this film do not agree on running time. The discrepancy is small, but it is worth stating precisely rather than choosing one figure.
| Source | Listed runtime | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Festival de Cannes film record | 168 minutes | Festival listing for the 2024 competition feature |
| Film at Lincoln Center | 166 minutes | 2024 New York Film Festival program listing |
| NEON Blu-ray product page | 166 minutes | Official home-media listing for the standard HD edition |
None of these sources explains the two-minute difference, so this article does not treat either figure as definitive. If runtime matters for your viewing plans, check the listing for the specific screening or disc you intend to watch.

Recognition
Cannes’ official film record lists the film as having received a Special Prize at the 2024 festival. Unifrance records the award under a different label, the Cannes Special Grand Prize from the Jury, and also lists two further honours. The labels differ between sources, so the table below reports each as it is recorded.
| Recognition | Body recording it | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Special Prize, 2024 | Cannes film record | Festival award listed as the Special Prize |
| Special Grand Prize from the Jury | Unifrance | Recorded as the Cannes award; Unifrance’s wording differs from Cannes’ |
| FIPRESCI Award | Unifrance | Award from the international film critics’ federation, as recorded by Unifrance |
| François Chalais Award | Unifrance | Award recorded by Unifrance |
| Germany’s Academy Awards submission | DGA | Submitted by Germany for the 97th Academy Awards’ Best International Feature Film category; a submission is not a nomination |
Thierry Frémaux, director of the Cannes Film Festival, framed the festival’s support in these terms, saying it sought to express support “for all artists around the world who suffer violence and persecution in their artistic expression.”
The director’s situation
The film’s context is inseparable from its maker’s position. Cannes’ account says Rasoulof had faced cultural repression and could not accept the festival’s 2023 invitation to join its feature-film jury. According to the Associated Press, he faced an eight-year prison sentence when he fled Iran and arrived in Cannes two weeks after his escape. The DGA records that he completed the film after fleeing to Germany.
Rasoulof told the AP: “I have many more stories to tell, many more narratives to create and films to make.” The AP reports he also explained: “That’s what persuaded me to leave Iran. I had to go on with this mission. I feel that my mission is to connect the audiences of the world to these stories, to this Iranian narrative. This is my plan for the coming years.”

NEON’s official film page attributes a further statement to him: “I have no doubt that restricting and suppressing freedom of expression cannot be justified even if it becomes a spur for creativity, but when there is no way, a way must be made.”
