The Naked Gun opened to a listed $16,805,560 domestically, making it Liam Neeson’s biggest qualifying opening as a leading star since Taken 3. It did not beat Taken 3: that film opened to $39.2 million. The distinction is that the new comedy led Neeson’s lead-role openings in the intervening decade, according to an August 2025 industry report.
What The Naked Gun earned on its opening weekend
Box Office Mojo lists The Naked Gun (2025) with a domestic opening of $16,805,560. The Associated Press’ contemporary weekend report rounded its North American debut to $17 million, from 3,344 locations, and placed the film third at the box office. These figures describe the same debut using different reporting scopes and precision: the database’s final listed domestic figure and AP’s rounded North American estimate.

The distinction matters when repeating the headline. “Biggest opening” here is not a claim that The Naked Gun set a new personal record for Neeson; it is a comparison among his subsequent lead-role openings.
Why Taken 3 is the comparison point
An August 2025 industry report described The Naked Gun as Neeson’s biggest opening as a leading star since Taken 3, which opened to $39.2 million. The comparison is role-qualified: it concerns films in which Neeson was a lead, rather than every movie in which he appeared. The available figures support that reported framing, not an independently audited ranking of all his releases or roles.

That makes the headline’s time frame straightforward: Taken 3 is the earlier benchmark, and The Naked Gun is his largest qualifying lead-role opener in the period since. The $16.8 million domestic listing remains well below Taken 3’s reported $39.2 million opening.
Who made the 2025 film
Paramount identifies Liam Neeson as Frank Drebin Jr. and Akiva Schaffer as the director. The film continues a franchise that began with the following three earlier titles:
