Sarah Cooper’s lip-sync posted on June 3, 2020 uses audio from a 2015 Bloomberg Politics interview in which Donald Trump, then a Republican presidential candidate, declined to name a favorite Bible verse, answered “Probably equal” when asked whether he was an Old Testament or New Testament person, and called the Bible incredible. The video is built entirely on Trump’s recorded words. Cooper is not interviewing him and he did not say anything new for the clip. It circulated during the protests that followed George Floyd’s killing and amid attention to Trump’s June 1, 2020 visit to St John’s Episcopal Church, where he posed with a Bible.
What the video is
The clip is a lip-sync. Cooper mouths along to Trump’s own audio from the interview, so the performance is the edit: the pauses, the evasive answer and the sudden praise are placed side by side. The post date of June 3, 2020 is taken from the Scroll.in report that introduced the video.
The title calls Trump’s comments “bizarre.” That word is editorial framing, not a measured or verifiable fact. The interview itself is accurately described as an unusual answer to a routine question, and that is how this article treats it.
One detail is easy to miss. Trump was a candidate in 2015, not the sitting president. The title’s “US President” describes him as he was in June 2020, when the clip was posted, while the remarks in the clip were made five years earlier.

What Trump said in the 2015 interview
The exchange took place in a Bloomberg Politics interview. A contemporaneous broadcast transcript dated August 27, 2015, later published by MS NOW, and a Guardian report reproducing the exchange both preserve the wording. Three questions matter:
| Question | Trump’s answer (as quoted in the transcript and reporting) | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Which Bible verses do you like? (asked by Mark Halperin) | “The Bible means a lot to me but I don’t want to get into specifics.” | He declines to name a single verse, saying the subject is personal. |
| Are you an Old Testament or New Testament person? (asked by John Heilemann) | “Probably equal.” | He claims no preference between the two halves of the Bible. |
| Follow-up on the Bible as a whole | “I think it’s just incredible, the whole Bible is incredible.” | He praises the book in general terms, with no passage or teaching attached. |
The structure of the exchange is what the lip-sync exploits. A question about specifics gets a refusal to be specific, followed by a sweeping compliment. Whether that reflects a private faith, a reluctance to discuss religion on camera, or simply an off-the-cuff answer is not something the transcript can settle.

Two timelines that should be kept apart
The clip joins two separate events nearly five years apart. Readers often assume the interview was recorded in response to the 2020 news. It was not.
| Date | Event | Source for the date |
|---|---|---|
| August 27, 2015 | Bloomberg Politics interview; Trump answers the Bible questions | Contemporaneous broadcast transcript, later published by MS NOW |
| June 1, 2020 | Trump visits St John’s Episcopal Church and poses with a Bible | Guardian live coverage, June 2, 2020 |
| June 2, 2020 | Guardian live coverage reports the 2015 exchange in the context of the church visit | Guardian live coverage, June 2, 2020 |
| June 3, 2020 | Cooper posts the lip-sync built on the 2015 audio | Scroll.in report on the post |
The June 2020 circulation therefore happened because an old answer was newly relevant, not because Trump had made a fresh statement about the Bible.

How to read the joke
Read as interpretation, the lip-sync draws its effect from contrast. The politician who will not name one verse is the same person who calls the whole book incredible, and placing that answer beside images of a Bible photo opportunity invites viewers to weigh the two. Any further claim about the clip’s political meaning is a reading of the edit, not something the sources establish.
Coverage available for this article does not include an explanation from Cooper of what she intended. Readers who want her stated purpose will need to look to statements she has made herself, which are not reproduced in the reporting cited here.

What is and is not established
- Established: the interview date (August 27, 2015), the wording of the three answers, the Bloomberg Politics setting, the June 1, 2020 church visit, and the June 3, 2020 posting date.
- Established as context: the clip circulated during protests after George Floyd’s killing and during attention to the church visit.
- Not established: Cooper’s intent, any audience or viewing figures for the clip, and any published statistic about it.
- Editorial, not factual: the description “bizarre.”
If you are citing the clip, cite the 2015 interview as the source of the words and June 3, 2020 as the date of Cooper’s post, and keep the two dates separate.
