The season’s central warning is that trying to match Homelander’s power is changing the people who oppose him—and the finale shows that his violence may now win public approval.
Why Butcher and Hughie turn to Temp V
Season 3 opens after a year of relative calm. Butcher is working for the government under Hughie’s supervision, but both men still want to bring down Homelander. A rumored anti-Supe weapon leads them to Soldier Boy, a Vought-era hero believed to be dead. Prime Video’s synopsis describes the discovery as a chase for “the legend of the first Superhero: Soldier Boy.” Prime Video’s Season 3 listing sets out that premise.

Butcher and Hughie secretly take Temp V, also called V24, which gives them temporary powers. It comes at a steep cost: TheWrap’s 2024 recap reports that Butcher took as many as six doses and was told he had 18 months to live. That is a fictional prognosis in the show, as reported by TheWrap—not a real-world medical figure. TheWrap’s Season 3 recap covers the consequences.
What changes for Homelander and Ryan
Homelander grows less invested in maintaining public approval through a polished image and more openly violent. Soldier Boy is revealed to be his biological father, but rejects the prospect of a family with him. Homelander instead draws Ryan under his wing.
#1 Best Overall
The season’s final scene makes the danger clear. At a public appearance with Ryan, a protester throws an object that hits the boy. Homelander kills the protester with his heat vision in front of the crowd. Rather than recoil, his supporters cheer; Ryan appears to approve. The moment gives Homelander a lesson in how far he can go in public—and gives Ryan a close-up view of that lesson being rewarded. Amazon’s Season 3, Episode 8 guide also identifies the protester scene and the crowd’s reaction.
Why the plan to use Soldier Boy falls apart
The Boys try to use Soldier Boy as a weapon against Homelander, but the alliance breaks when Soldier Boy’s planned blast puts Ryan in danger. Butcher intervenes, and he and Soldier Boy fight. That gives Maeve time to confront Homelander, but the group fails to kill him. Homelander survives and leaves with Ryan.
Rank #2
- The world is on the brink. Victoria Neuman is closer than ever to the Oval Office and under Homelander's muscly thumb as he consolidates his power. Butcher, with only months to live, has lost Becca's son, and his job as The Boys' leader. The rest of the team are fed up with his lies. With the stakes higher than ever, they must find a way to work together and save the world before it's too late.
The split is the season’s key tactical failure: Butcher cannot carry through with a plan that risks Ryan, even when stopping it means losing their best chance to kill Homelander. Soldier Boy does not become a dependable ally, and the threat the Boys set out to eliminate remains.
Where Annie and Hughie stand
Annie rejects the Starlight persona Vought has packaged for her and joins the Boys. Hughie’s decision to take Temp V is tied to more than the fight: he feels insecure about being protected by Annie and wants control and a sense of self-worth. Butcher advises against the drug, but Hughie takes it anyway.

What happens to Maeve and Black Noir
- Maeve survives. She confronts Homelander, survives the battle with Soldier Boy, loses an eye and her powers, then leaves with Elena. She is not killed in the Season 3 finale.
- Black Noir dies. Homelander kills him after learning that Noir concealed the truth about Soldier Boy’s paternity.
Why Victoria Neuman matters going into Season 4
Viewers learn that Victoria Neuman is a Supe and Stan Edgar’s adopted daughter. In the finale, she is named the vice-presidential running mate of Robert “Dakota Bob” Singer. That places a powerful Supe closer to national office, while her private intentions remain uncertain.

No. The direct bridge is useful context, but it does not require retelling the spin-off to follow this recap. At the end of Gen V Season 1, Butcher visits Godolkin University’s secret lab, The Woods, and learns about a Supe-killing virus developed by Indira Shetty and Dr. Edison Cardosa. TheWrap reported that showrunner Eric Kripke described the scene as the start of a story that continues in The Boys Season 4.
Rank #4
Kripke said the team wanted to “start the first step of that story,” adding that Butcher is “very aware of this virus” in Season 4. The quoted remarks are from TheWrap’s recap and interview. The practical takeaway is simply that the virus is on Butcher’s radar; the Godolkin material is crossover context, not a prerequisite for understanding the Season 3 finale.
