Spoilers for the Season 1 finale of The Abandons. After seven episodes of betrayals and escalating violence, Fiona Nolan and Constance Van Ness finally face each other hand to hand inside the burning remains of the Van Ness estate. Their fight is the reckoning the series has been building toward—but its final image does not reveal which woman survives.
Why Fiona and Constance’s confrontation was inevitable
The Abandons sets Fiona Nolan, played by Lena Headey, against Constance Van Ness, played by Gillian Anderson, in a land war over silver-rich Jasper Hollow near Angel’s Ridge. The dispute is about more than property: each woman sees herself as protecting her family, but they have very different ideas about family, power and what they are entitled to do in its name.

Executive producer Chris Keyser summed up their shared motive to Netflix Tudum: “They both want to do the same thing,” protect their families. That common ground does not make their conflict less brutal. Over the seven-episode season, betrayals, secret alliances and shifting loyalties turn the struggle into a personal feud. The finale brings it to a head in the burning Van Ness home.
What happens in the finale fight
Land and family become personal
The confrontation is also an argument about grief and whose family counts. Constance regards the loss of her biological son Willem as singular. Fiona counters that the children she adopted are no less her family. Keyser characterized Fiona’s position this way: “Those whom I choose to love, I love every bit as deeply and as meaningfully as you do. Maybe more meaningfully.” That is Keyser describing the force of Fiona’s answer, not a line to attribute to Fiona as dialogue.

Willem’s death deepens the divide
TV Insider’s Dec. 4, 2025 account traces the revelation behind the women’s confrontation: Willem sexually assaulted Dahlia; after Dahlia stabbed him and the family tried to save him, Fiona killed him. Fiona took responsibility so Dahlia would not have to carry the burden of saying she had killed a man. The report says Fiona did not regret killing Willem. The act makes the family dispute still more fraught: Fiona’s fierce protection of her children comes with grave moral consequences.
Neither woman is presented as an uncomplicated hero
Fiona has built a family and defended its members, but her protection has involved lying, killing, covering up killings and launching an armed assault. She can frame her actions through faith, at least until that explanation no longer holds. Headey told Netflix Tudum: “Fiona can always, always, always relieve her guilt by saying it was of God’s making or [it was] God’s instruction, until she can’t get away with that anymore.”

Constance’s wealth and influence give her different means of defending her family and interests; Fiona’s position and choices are different, but neither woman’s motives erase the damage she causes. Keyser told Netflix Tudum that he dislikes stories with “completely obvious villains and completely obvious heroes.” The finale’s conflict is built around that moral tension rather than a simple verdict on which woman is good.
Did Anderson and Headey do their own stunts?
According to TV Insider, stunt doubles showed the actors the ropes, and Anderson and Headey then performed the fighting themselves. The sequence was filmed in one day, about one or two months after the rest of production had wrapped. Headey described the fight day as “really good fun.”

Who survives in The Abandons?
The finale does not say. Its last image shows one soot-covered silhouette emerging from the fire, but does not identify it as Fiona or Constance. Netflix Tudum describes the ambiguity as intentional. Keyser declined to settle the question, telling Tudum: “I’m not going to answer that question. … I have a feeling about how it ought to go, but I don’t want to, in any way, tip my hand.” TV Insider reported that the actresses themselves did not know who survived. The identity remains a cliffhanger, not a reveal viewers can resolve from the scene.
