Season 4 is the strongest case for the show’s “most dramatic” reputation because it puts Maggie’s past back in her present, splits her relationship with Cal, and ends on a proposal that is never answered. “Most dramatic” is an editorial judgment rather than an official ranking, but the story events below support it.
What the show is and where it starts
Sullivan’s Crossing is a romantic small-town drama created by Roma Roth and adapted from Robyn Carr’s book series. It follows neurosurgeon Maggie Sullivan as she returns to her hometown in Nova Scotia. The series premiered on CTV in 2023; the Netflix season 1 explainer covers that opening premise. You do not need to rewatch the early seasons to follow season 4, but the season 3 ending explained below is the setup you need.
Why season 4 feels more dramatic
Season 3 closed with Maggie choosing to stay in Timberlake, planning to open a general practice, and reuniting with Cal. Then Liam appeared and called himself her husband. Sully had left for Ireland, and Maggie and Cal’s plans were uncertain. The season 3 ending explainer, published July 13, 2025, lays out that setup.
Liam returns and disrupts a settled life
Netflix’s season 4 guide, published July 9, 2026, says Liam introduces himself as Maggie’s current husband in front of her friends and her boyfriend, Cal. He says he is moving to Europe to continue his work as a war reporter and needs documentation of their annulment for his visa process. The guide describes the unresolved tension between Liam and Maggie and the clash between Liam and Cal. This is the engine of the season: a past relationship that was supposed to be closed is now a paperwork problem with emotional weight.

Cal breaks up with Maggie
In creator Roma Roth’s season 4 ending interview, published July 10, 2026, Roth says Maggie and Liam have “unfinished business” and that Maggie is questioning whom she should be with. After Liam leaves, Cal breaks up with Maggie and turns down her first attempts at reconciliation. Roth’s comment on Cal is worth reading in full: “Cal has always been a very patient and forgiving character.” The same interview adds a line that frames the show’s core: “Sullivan’s Crossing has always revolved around Maggie Sullivan’s journey to reconcile her present with her past.”
Career stakes change the relationship
Roth says the season’s emphasis shifts toward Maggie’s relationship with Cal and her new career, which she frames as a natural progression after Sully’s absence. Later in the season, Maggie puts her career on the line to help Ben and Tracy. Cal recognizes that she has changed, and he proposes. This is the point where the season stops being only a love triangle and becomes a story about what Maggie is willing to risk.

The cliffhanger
The proposal is interrupted. Tracy arrives with a social worker, and Maggie’s answer is never given. Roth’s interview does not resolve her response, and it points viewers toward the next season for what happens. For a binge viewer, this is the most important practical point: the season ends on a question, not a resolution.
What the evidence supports, and what it does not
The official sources establish the season’s plot, its creator’s intentions, and its ending. They do not rank season 4 against earlier seasons. Calling it the most dramatic is a reasonable reading of the events above, but it is still a critical judgment. The audience figures The CW has published are network-reported and cannot stand in for a quality assessment.

Is it worth a binge?
Binge it if most of these apply to you:
- You want romantic tension that carries across episodes, with a central triangle rather than a single meet-cute.
- You are comfortable with a cliffhanger, because season 4 does not resolve Maggie’s choice.
- You care about a character whose career and personal life pull in different directions.
- You can wait for season 5, which is not yet dated beyond its year.
If you dislike soap-style reversals or want self-contained episodes, the show may feel slow. The season 4 arc depends on earlier history, so starting from season 4 without the season 3 ending will leave the Liam storyline hard to follow.

On July 16, 2026, The CW announced a 10-episode fifth season for 2027, in its season 5 release. That announcement is a network decision. It does not confirm a Netflix window or a specific premiere date.
Reading the books behind the show
Netflix confirms that the series is adapted from Robyn Carr’s Sullivan’s Crossing books, so readers who want more of the setting can look for the Robyn Carr Sullivan’s Crossing book series. The novels are the source material, not a replay of the TV season plots, so reading them will not spoil season 4’s storylines.

Season 4 raises the stakes for Maggie and Cal, and the cliffhanger means the story is still open. Whether it is the show’s most dramatic season depends on how much you value that kind of uncertainty, but the events above are what make the claim hold up.
