The major update is that CBC’s comedy has been confirmed for a fifth season, and Season 5 will be its last. A May 4, 2026 media release, reproduced by the Canadian TV site TV, eh?, said production had started on Season 5 and that Mark Critch had announced the series would end with it. Season 5 was scheduled for Fall 2026 on CBC and CBC Gem. The release does not say that Season 4 has new story details, so this article separates what has been confirmed from what the earlier listings leave unclear.
What the update confirms
Season 5 is the final season of Son of a Critch. Mark Critch, who co-created the series with Tim McAuliffe and stars in it, made the announcement, and the release describes the season as the show’s last chapter. Critch’s own wording was: “since it’s the last year of high school, it will also be our final chapter. Growing up is hard to do – but it sure is fun to watch.”

The series is based on Critch’s memoir, which is the source the story draws from. Its premise follows the younger version of Mark through his formative years, and CBC’s general manager of entertainment, Sally Catto, described the show as having “formed a deep bond with audiences who have watched young Mark grow up through his most formative years.”
Where Season 4 stands
The “Season 4” angle in many headlines comes from CBC’s media listing for the series. That listing includes a synopsis in which Mark starts grade nine, spends a year as “Big Man On Campus,” and then sees the social hierarchy reset when he reaches high school. The captured listing text does not say which season that synopsis describes, and no season-numbered CBC page in the material reviewed resolves it.
#1 Best Overall
For that reason, the grade-nine storyline should not be presented as a confirmed Season 4 development. What can be said is that the listing describes a 30-minute, eight-episode format, while the May 2026 release gives Season 5 as 12 episodes of 30 minutes. Those figures are not the same season, and the listing does not say which one it refers to. Readers who need the season-by-season episode count should check CBC’s own season pages.
What the final season covers
According to the May 2026 release, Season 5 returns to 1992, the year Critch graduated high school. The story follows Mark through his last year of school while Newfoundland’s cod moratorium crisis changes his family’s circumstances. Mark also keeps pursuing acting, which the release presents as a running thread through the season.

Critch framed the return to that year in the release: “We’re heading back to 1992 – the year I graduated high school – so you can expect all the awkwardness and growing pains that come with it.”
Production details
- Location: Production was underway in St. John’s, Newfoundland, according to the May 2026 release.
- Filming window: The release said filming would continue until June 18, 2026.
- Format: Season 5 was described as 12 episodes of 30 minutes each.
Premiere date and channel
The release listed Fall 2026 on CBC and CBC Gem for Season 5. A June 1, 2026 schedule report gave a more specific date: a September 8, 2026 premiere at 8:30 p.m. on CBC, with CBC programming also streaming the same day on CBC Gem.

That date has now passed. As of October 8, 2026, this article cannot confirm how the premiere went or whether the schedule changed after June. Check CBC’s schedule or the CBC Gem listing for the current status of Season 5 episodes.
Where to watch earlier seasons
The May 2026 release said Seasons 1 through 4 were available on CBC Gem at that time. That is a dated statement about CBC Gem, not a current guarantee. Catalog availability changes, and the material reviewed does not confirm what is available today or in any region outside Canada. Before planning a rewatch, check CBC Gem directly.

Recognition
Two awards facts are established in the reviewed material. The series received a 2026 Canadian Screen Award nomination for Best Comedy Series, and it won the Cogeco Fund Audience Choice Award at the 2024 Canadian Screen Awards. These are awards records, not audience or viewing figures. No ratings or viewership numbers for the series were established in the material reviewed.
Taken together, the confirmed update is simple: Son of a Critch has a fifth and final season that moves Mark into his last year of high school in 1992, and the Season 4 grade-nine synopsis remains unattributed to a specific season.
