But the available figures do not establish which horror rival it overtook: the headline does not specify a film or territory, and a valid comparison requires matching both the market and the time period.
What the reported box-office figures show
The Numbers lists Smile 2 with a domestic gross of $69,012,586 and a worldwide gross of $138,024,364. Its 2024 domestic chart also gives the film a $69,012,586 gross and ranks films by cumulative North American earnings for movies released in 2024. The chart is therefore a domestic, release-year ranking—not a worldwide ranking.

These are database-reported totals, not a claim that a specific rival was passed at a particular moment. Historical box-office records can be updated, so a current database total and a year-end comparison should not be treated as interchangeable without checking their dates and definitions.
Which horror movie did Smile 2 pass?
The evidence available does not identify a particular rival or verify an overtaking claim on a like-for-like basis. Joker: Folie à Deux appears as a possible domestic comparison in the surrounding reporting, while Terrifier 3 was a contemporaneous horror competitor. Neither mention, on its own, establishes that Smile 2 finished ahead of that film in the same territory and on the same time basis.

To substantiate an overtaking claim, compare domestic with domestic or worldwide with worldwide, and compare calendar-year earnings with calendar-year earnings—or final lifetime totals with final lifetime totals. A domestic year-end chart cannot prove a worldwide lifetime ranking, and an opening-weekend report cannot establish a final-gross result.
How Smile 2 performed at release
The Associated Press reported that Smile 2 opened at number one in North America in October 2024, with an estimated $23 million opening weekend. A Hollywood Reporter report reproduced by Yahoo also put the opening at an estimated $23 million domestically and $23 million overseas, and noted Terrifier 3 as another horror release competing for audiences. Those opening figures describe the launch, not which film ultimately earned more.

The AP also reported that the first Smile earned about $217 million worldwide against a $17 million budget. That figure belongs to the 2022 original, not the sequel. The Numbers lists a $28 million production budget for Smile 2; comparing either film’s gross with its production budget alone does not account for marketing, distribution costs, or the share of ticket revenue received by theaters.

The reported $138 million worldwide gross places Smile 2 well above its listed $28 million production budget in gross ticket sales, while its North American total is the relevant figure for the 2024 domestic chart. Those numbers provide useful scale, but they do not by themselves establish profitability or a specific rival’s final position.
