Elle Macpherson has said that early in her modeling career she did not match the waif-thin ideal she saw in fashion. Rather than try to blend in, she came to embrace her height and athletic build as part of what made her distinctive—and, in her account, helped her become more confident and memorable to clients.
Macpherson’s recollection of the fashion ideal
In a 2019 account by the Australian Associated Press, Macpherson recalled beginning to pursue modeling in New York as a teenager. She described herself as six feet tall, with broad shoulders from swimming, and said she was not built like the waif-thin fashion ideal she encountered. Those details are her personal recollections, not measurements or a description of every model or era.
Her response, she said, was to stop treating those differences as something to correct. “I just needed to embrace my uniqueness,” Macpherson said, as quoted by AAP / PerthNow.
How self-acceptance became part of her professional identity
In a separate interview with NewBeauty, Macpherson linked accepting her appearance to growing confidence: “So, it was when I managed to embrace my uniqueness and stand in my own truth of what I was, that I became more confident.” She also connected that confidence with being booked for work. This is her account of how she experienced her career, not independent proof that self-acceptance alone caused her success.

The nickname “The Body” eventually became part of her public and business identity. In a WelleCo interview, Macpherson reflected: “When I started to embrace myself as that [The Body] rather than homogenise like everybody else was when my career really took off.” The comment captures her interpretation of the shift: being distinctive, rather than trying to resemble others, became central to how she presented herself.

Macpherson’s story is a personal account of negotiating an ideal she felt did not fit her body. It illustrates how she understood her own path from feeling different to using that difference as part of her professional identity. It does not establish that the fashion industry had one uniform standard, or that embracing individuality guarantees career success.
