The surprise was the mismatch: a sober news-style interview with an AI professor, interrupted by Gosling and Mikey Day as the MTV duo. The sketch had been in development for years, and its making involved a compressed makeup schedule and a live break that the cast members still describe in different ways.
What the sketch sets up
Heidi Gardner plays a news moderator interviewing Kenan Thompson’s AI professor. The professor is trying to keep the discussion on track when Gosling and Day appear in the audience with exaggerated Beavis and Butt-Head looks. The joke depends on the contrast: the interview stays grave while the audience members become harder to ignore. The most visible break comes when Gardner’s moderator turns toward Day’s Butt-Head face.
- Heidi Gardner: the moderator
- Kenan Thompson: the AI professor
- Ryan Gosling: Beavis
- Mikey Day: Butt-Head, who also co-wrote the sketch with Streeter Seidell
The sketch was posted to SNL’s YouTube channel. Vanity Fair reported in a June 6, 2024 oral history that the count had reached 16 million views at that time; that is a dated snapshot, not a current total, and the outlet’s description of the episode as the season’s most-watched does not come with a ratings figure or measurement method. The official SNL sketch video is the direct reference for the broadcast performance.
Years of development before the 2024 version
According to the Vanity Fair oral history, Day and Seidell had been pursuing the idea for roughly six years before it reached air. The story traces the earliest version to a 2018 episode hosted by Jonah Hill, and that version was cut.

The 2018 version and why it was cut
The earlier draft used a straight-line premise that was far darker: an interview with a suspected wife murderer. Writers and producers judged that framing did not work for the show, and the idea was shelved. The oral history presents the cut as a tonal decision rather than a failure of the Beavis and Butt-Head premise itself.
Lorne Michaels and the balance problem
The 2024 version kept the idea of a serious setup but changed what the serious thing was. Lorne Michaels, SNL’s creator and executive producer, described the creative challenge in the Vanity Fair account as keeping real stakes in the scene without making the audience too somber. As he put it: “The game of it is that there’s a real, serious thing going on, and here are these two guys.”

Building two cartoon faces in a short window
The makeup and hair work was the production’s hardest technical problem, and the reporting gives the most detail here. The team took a 3D scan and a life cast, then sculpted prosthetics that built out Day’s forehead and nose. The look also included a wig and a mouthpiece with braces, all assembled in a short period. The reporting says there was no camera test, so the completed look was first seen on Day at dress rehearsal.
Louie Zakarian, the SNL makeup artist, described the challenge this way: “To bring a cartoon character to life and make it three-dimensional and put it on actors is one of the biggest challenges I’ve had to deal with in the 30 years I’ve been there.” The quote comes from the Vanity Fair oral history.

The rehearsal laughter and the live break
The account of who laughed, when, and how often differs between participants, and the sources do not reconcile it into one sequence. Each version below is attributed to the person who gave it.
Gardner’s account
In an April 2024 report by the Los Angeles Times, Gardner said the look was difficult to prepare for and that she felt anxiety afterward about whether breaking character had been acceptable. Her line about the moment has stuck with her: “I’ll never be able to shake looking over my shoulder and seeing what I saw.” She had laughed during rehearsal, she said, but was caught off guard again on air.

Thompson’s account
The Vanity Fair oral history quotes Thompson saying he had laughed hard at dress rehearsal and was more prepared for the live show. That account describes his own reaction and does not settle what happened in Gardner’s scene on air.

Gardner told TheWrap in a June 13, 2024 interview that she had not expected the sketch to reach the audience it did. She recalled it as a relatively small piece among larger productions that week. She suggested two things helped viewers connect: the throwback recognition of the characters, and the shared laughter that spread through the room and onto the screen. She also noted that some viewers said they could introduce the characters to their children.

The two versions compared
| Element | Earlier version (2018 Jonah Hill episode) | Aired version (April 13, 2024, Ryan Gosling episode) |
|---|---|---|
| Straight-line premise | Interview with a suspected wife murderer; cut as too dark | Interview with an AI professor; the disruption comes from the audience |
| Performers tied to the idea | Jonah Hill’s episode | Gosling as Beavis, Day as Butt-Head |
| Development | Pursued by Day and Seidell; described as roughly six years of pursuit before air (Vanity Fair, June 6, 2024) | Completed look first seen at dress rehearsal; no camera test (Vanity Fair) |
| Tonal handling | Dark framing judged unworkable for the show | Serious stakes kept, but not so somber that the audience stops laughing (Lorne Michaels, per Vanity Fair) |
What the sources do and do not establish
The development timeline, the 2018 cut, the makeup process, and the premise come from the Vanity Fair oral history, which relies on participant recollections. The Los Angeles Times report from April 17, 2024 and Gardner’s June 2024 TheWrap interview add her perspective on the performance and the response. Where accounts of the rehearsal or the live moment differ, the differences are real and are reported as such. The view count is a June 2024 figure and has not been updated here.
