Lucy Liu gives Rosemead its center of gravity: a restrained, deeply affecting performance as a mother trying to protect her son while facing her own terminal illness. Eric Lin’s 2025 drama is not a thriller built around suspense so much as an intimate family story about mental illness, stigma and the terrible pressure of limited choices. Its subject makes for difficult viewing, but Liu’s work gives the film its strongest reason to watch.

Is Lucy Liu good in Rosemead?

Yes. Liu plays Irene, a Chinese immigrant mother in California’s San Gabriel Valley, with a quietness that makes the character’s resolve more affecting, not less. The Los Angeles Times review describes the performance as transformational, noting how Liu makes Irene seem physically inconspicuous while conveying a steady determination. Her shifts between halting English and fluent Mandarin add detail to a character negotiating family life across languages.

“Oscar-worthy” is an apt way to describe the ambition and emotional force of Liu’s work, not a statement that she received an Academy Award nomination. She is also a producer on the film. Liu has described the challenge of making audiences see Irene as a person rather than quickly vilifying her: “How do I counteract that by humanizing her and showing the love that she had for her son for her to do what she did?” Her Los Angeles Times interview frames that humanizing effort as central to the role.

What is Rosemead about?

Irene is terminally ill, and her teenage son Joe is in a worsening crisis, with a fixation on school shootings. The film follows her attempts to respond as a mother under pressure, amid the stigma and difficulty of speaking openly about mental illness. Lawrence Shou plays Joe; the screenplay is by Marilyn Fu and Eric Lin directs. The film runs 97 minutes and is listed in English and Chinese. Films Boutique’s sales listing describes its focus as mental illness, motherhood under pressure, cultural stigma and parental agency.

#1 Best Overall

Rosemead is based on a true story, but it is a dramatic feature, not a documentary. That distinction matters: the film takes a real-life story as its basis, but its dramatic scenes should not be treated as independently verified accounts of every detail.

What works—and what may not

A character drama, not a conventional thriller

The premise touches fears associated with school violence, but the film’s emphasis is on Irene’s family and the decisions she faces rather than on building a plot-driven thriller. Its tight focus can make the story feel intimate and immediate. It also means the film offers a limited view of a complicated social problem rather than a broad explanation of mental illness or its treatment.

Emotional force comes with a heavy viewing experience

The material is grave, and the film asks viewers to stay close to a family in crisis. The Rotten Tomatoes page’s critic consensus calls it a sensitive showcase for Liu, while one review there finds the direction visually stiff and the experience increasingly exhausting. Both reactions point to a real trade-off: the restrained approach supports the performance and the family focus, but the deliberate pacing and sustained distress may feel draining or heavy-handed to some viewers. This is not comfort viewing.

Language and stigma are part of the drama

The film’s attention to English and Mandarin is not just a performance detail; it also connects with the difficulty of discussing mental illness across family and community boundaries. The Los Angeles Times review notes the story’s treatment of stigma and language barriers, including how an Asian American community can struggle to talk about mental illness. Liu has said that silence can narrow the choices people see: “when you don’t, it’s going to lead to decision-making where you don’t have options.” The film places that idea inside Irene’s circumstances rather than offering a sweeping account of every family or community.

Is Rosemead worth watching?

It is worth watching if you want a performance-led drama and are prepared for emotionally difficult subject matter. Liu’s nuanced portrayal is the main draw; the film’s intimate scope and measured style will suit viewers more interested in character and family pressure than momentum or visual variety. Those looking for a tense, fast-moving thriller—or a lighter film—may find its approach too restrained and its subject too punishing.

At the time of access on October 8, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes listed an 87% Tomatometer from 53 reviews and a 78% audience score from more than 50 ratings. Those are mutable, platform-specific aggregates, not awards or universal measures of quality. The film’s listed festival recognition includes selection at Tribeca 2025, the Prix du Public UBS Piazza Grande at the 78th Locarno Film Festival, and Bentonville Film Festival 2025’s Jury Award for Best Narrative Feature. Films Boutique lists a December 5, 2025 US local release and Vertical as domestic distributor.
