In Sketch, a girl’s drawings become real creatures—and the family must face the grief and tensions behind them. The 2025 film mixes fantasy, scares, comedy and a serious story about a father trying to reconnect with his children. It is a fantastical family feature, not a documentary or a guide to children’s mental health.
What happens in Sketch?
Amber’s sketchbook falls into a strange pond, bringing its drawings to life. Amber and her brother, Jack, try to track the creatures while their father, Taylor, searches for them and tries to reunite the family. The official synopsis sets up a creature adventure; the story also connects Amber’s drawings to grief after her mother’s death and to conflicts at home.

The creatures reflect more than an imaginative child’s monster designs. Writer-director Seth Worley told NHPR that they are tied to relationships or conflicts in Amber’s life. For example, eyeders—eyeball creatures with spider legs—appear after her father takes her notebook despite promising not to. Their texture also follows the art material: crayon creatures look waxy, while chalk ones can crumble into powder.
What do the drawings mean?
Worley has described the film as an exploration of the tension a parent may feel when a child’s art contains frightening or violent images: creative expression can be a place for difficult feelings, while a parent may still feel alarmed by what they see. In Sketch, the drawings give that tension a literal, fantastical form, linking Amber’s inner life to the family’s struggle to understand one another.

Worley traced part of the premise to a childhood memory about his sister. After she drew a violent image of a teacher, a school counselor asked whether she wanted the event to happen. Worley recalled that his sister said she had wanted it while drawing, but no longer did; the counselor told her the drawing “was a much healthier choice than actually doing it.” Worley said the exchange helped shape “the kind of adult I want to be in some kid’s life when I grow up.” This is his account of a formative personal experience, not a general rule about how to interpret a child’s drawing.
He has also connected the idea to his own reaction when his young daughter brought home violent drawings. His stated creative aim was to empower children’s self-expression and encourage parents to make room for it. That is the filmmaker’s perspective, not evidence that drawing by itself treats grief, anger or distress.

Is Sketch scary, funny, or an emotional drama?
It is deliberately hard to put in one genre box. NHPR host Ari Shapiro and Worley discussed its mix of comedy, fantasy and horror. Worley said viewers expecting The Babadook might be surprised by the humor, while those expecting Goosebumps might be surprised by the emotional weight. His shorthand for the pitch was “Inside Out meets Jurassic Park”—a comparison, not a formal genre label.
The film’s frightening creatures sit alongside comic adventure and a story about bereavement and family relationships. Angel Studios lists it as PG. That rating and the broad genre description do not predict how a particular child will respond; a family deciding whether to watch should weigh that child’s comfort with scary imagery and grief-related themes. The available sources do not provide a scene-by-scene content guide.
