Ian is the exception to the simple diagram: a secondary US-series character reference identifies him as Monica’s child with one of Frank’s brothers, making him Frank’s biological nephew as well as the other children’s half-brother and cousin. Frank treats Ian as his son. Source: the US character reference.
The US Shameless Gallagher family tree
This diagram shows the family as the children are raised and experience it in the US series. Ian’s biological connection is annotated below rather than treating him as Frank’s biological child.
- Frank Gallagher and Monica Gallagher are the parents of Fiona, Phillip (“Lip”), Debbie, Carl and Liam.
- Ian Gallagher is raised as their sibling and treated by Frank as a son, but the US character reference identifies his biological father as one of Frank’s brothers.
Who are Frank Gallagher’s children?
Frank’s biological children with Monica are Fiona, Lip, Debbie, Carl and Liam. Ian is Monica’s child with Frank’s brother, according to the US character reference; he is Frank’s nephew, and he is both a half-brother and cousin to the other Gallagher children.
In the sibling order commonly used to orient viewers, Fiona is eldest and Liam youngest. The official Channel 4 descriptions of the UK original identify Lip as second, Ian as third, Carl as second-youngest and Debbie as one of the middle children. Those ordinal descriptions are for the British series and should not be silently treated as an authoritative US-series birth order. Channel 4’s UK series overview and Channel 4’s series 8 description provide that UK framing.

Why Ian’s place in the tree is different
Ian’s relationships depend on whether “family” means biological parentage or the household in which he grows up. In the US-series account, Monica is his mother, and one of Frank’s brothers is his biological father. That makes Frank his uncle; Frank’s children with Monica are his half-siblings through their shared mother and his cousins through Frank’s brother. Yet Ian is brought up within the Gallagher sibling group, and Frank treats him as a son.
The reviewed sources do not provide an official US studio family-tree graphic. The biological detail here is attributed to a secondary character reference, not presented as a direct statement from the US production.

The US and UK versions are separate family trees
Shameless began as a British series and was adapted for US television. The Channel 4 sources describe the UK original, while the Ian parentage detail above is specifically attributed to a US character reference. Use the version label when consulting character descriptions: names and broad family roles may look familiar across adaptations, but evidence for one version does not automatically establish a detail in the other.
For the UK series, Channel 4 describes Fiona as carrying a de facto parent role in the household, overseeing chores, food and the family fund. That is Channel 4’s description of the British character, not a quote about the US version. Channel 4, “Series Overview” (21 April 2011).
