At SNL50: The Anniversary Special on February 16, 2025, Colin Jost made a Weekend Update joke about Sean “Diddy” Combs watching from Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center, and Fred Armisen later joked about pitching a cut sketch the next time Kevin Spacey hosts. They were pointed moments in a three-hour anniversary broadcast, not proof that the whole special set out to confront controversy: TIME characterized its broader approach as one in which controversy was “studiously avoided.”
What happened at the SNL50 anniversary special?
NBC’s three-hour special aired live from New York on February 16, 2025, from 8 to 11 p.m. ET, on NBC and Peacock. It marked the culmination of Saturday Night Live’s 50th-anniversary season; the series premiered on October 11, 1975, according to CBS News. NBCUniversal’s announcement and CBS News’ account of the anniversary provide the event context.
Two jokes stood out for their references to public controversies involving former host Spacey and Combs. Their settings and targets were different: Jost delivered his line in the show’s news parody, while Armisen’s came during an audience Q&A.
What did Colin Jost say about Diddy?
During Weekend Update, Jost joked that some former hosts and musical guests had to watch the special from a neighboring studio, while others had to watch “from the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.” An image of Combs appeared as he made the detention-center reference, CBS News reported. The Washington Post likewise described the line as a joke about Combs theoretically watching from a Brooklyn jail. CBS News’ recap and The Washington Post’s account cover the gag.
It was a punchline about where Combs might be watching—not a report that he was actually watching the special or that anyone had arranged a viewing for him.
What was the Kevin Spacey joke?
During an audience Q&A, Fred Armisen asked Lorne Michaels why he had cut Armisen’s “Vampire Office” sketch. Armisen then suggested he could pitch it again the next time Spacey hosts, TIME reported. The joke’s setup was the discarded sketch; its final reference supplied the punchline. TIME’s review of the special reports the exchange.

Did SNL50 make controversy a major theme?
The two jabs were sharp, recognizable moments, but they should not be mistaken for the tone of the entire broadcast. TIME’s review said controversy was “studiously avoided.” That broader description sits alongside the jokes rather than being disproved by them: the special could include pointed references without turning into an extended confrontation.

How large was the anniversary special’s audience?
NBCUniversal reported that the special drew 14.8 million viewers across NBC and Peacock in live-plus-same-day viewing, with a 2.53 rating among viewers ages 18–49 in that same measurement. These are the network’s reported figures, not a claim about total viewing over a longer period. NBCUniversal’s audience report gives the metrics.
NBCUniversal also reported 8.7 million social interactions, calling the special its highest-performing SNL episode or special on record for social interaction. That figure uses the network’s social-interaction measure; it is not a count of viewers. The network’s report provides the claim.
