Han Kang’s fiction confronts human suffering not only by depicting violence, but by asking what it does to vulnerable people—and how dignity, memory and connection might endure. In a 2016 interview, years before she received the Nobel Prize in Literature, Kang said that human violence was a question she kept returning to: “That kind of suffering always haunts me.”
Why does Han Kang return to human suffering?
Kang has described suffering as a persistent subject in her work. Asked why readers might need to prepare themselves for her novels, she answered, “I believe it’s because my novels directly explore human suffering.” In the same 2016 interview with novelist Krys Lee, she put the underlying problem more starkly: “Violence is part of being human, and how can I accept that I am one of those human beings?”
That question does not make her books simple records of atrocity. Her fiction considers people exposed to private and public violence, but also the struggle to preserve dignity, mourn loss and reach another person. The Nobel committee later described her work as “intense poetic prose that confronts historical traumas and exposes the fragility of human life,” a formulation quoted in Valentina Gosetti’s 2024 essay on Kang.
How the novels approach violence, grief and connection
| Book | Form of suffering | What the story asks |
|---|---|---|
| The Vegetarian | Family pressure and violence following a woman’s decision to stop eating meat | What happens when someone refuses a normalized way of living? |
| Human Acts | Mass violence and its aftermath in Gwangju | How can dignity, solidarity and memory survive public brutality? |
| The White Book | Intimate bereavement and mourning | How might loss be approached through objects and recollection? |
| Greek Lessons | The loss of speech and eyesight | What can people communicate when ordinary language and perception falter? |
The Vegetarian: bodily autonomy under pressure
In The Vegetarian, a woman stops eating meat, and her decision provokes escalating pressure and abuse from her family. Gosetti reads the novel as a challenge to normalized violence and the punishment of nonconformity. Kang, in her interview, said the book examines human violence and the possibility of human perfection.

The novel’s origins are more layered than a direct transcription of the author’s own experience. Kang said it developed from her 2000 short story “Fruits of My Woman,” which imagines a wife becoming a plant. She also recalled that a period of vegetarianism influenced the later novel. The Vegetarian was published in Korea in 2007, appeared in English translation in 2015, and won the 2016 Man Booker International Prize jointly for Kang and translator Deborah Smith, according to Gosetti’s account.
Human Acts: violence and the duty to remember
Human Acts addresses the Gwangju massacre of May 1980, which took place amid protest against the Chun Doo-hwan regime. Gosetti emphasizes the novel’s attention to solidarity, survival and remembrance alongside its depiction of violence.

Kang did not present the novel as eyewitness testimony. In the 2016 interview, she said she had not experienced the large-scale violence firsthand, although it affected her during her youth. She recalled living in Gwangju before moving to Seoul in January 1980. She also explained that, after writing the novel, she wanted to explore human dignity and strength more deeply.
The White Book: mourning through white objects
Gosetti describes The White Book as a meditative work organized around white objects and connected to the death of Kang’s newborn sister before Kang was born. In this reading, the objects offer a way to approach bereavement indirectly: attention to things becomes a form of attention to absence and memory.

Greek Lessons: what remains when words fail
In Gosetti’s account, Greek Lessons brings together a woman losing her ability to speak and a man losing his eyesight. Their circumstances frame questions about what can be expressed and shared, and what remains beyond words. The book’s concern with connection is not a promise that language can repair every loss; it is an inquiry into communication under severe limits.

Kang’s recurring subject is not violence in isolation. Her novels trace how it enters bodies, families and collective memory, while keeping attention on the people who endure it. The result can be difficult reading, but its emphasis is not simply despair: dignity, solidarity, mourning and the effort to communicate remain part of the human picture.
