At 80, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak tells Anjum Katyal that the thing that gives her purpose is usefulness: “Trying to be useful has made me happy.” The conversation, published by Scroll.in on February 24, 2022, moves from a Kolkata childhood and an American graduate education to the translation of Jacques Derrida, the essays that made her name, and a set of schools she helped build in rural Purulia. This guide walks through what she says, how the pieces connect, and what the interview does and does not establish.

The full text is at Scroll.in’s original interview. Treat its personal recollections as Spivak’s account rather than as independently verified history; where this guide reports a dated event, it is reporting what she says happened.
Childhood, family and early schooling
Katyal opens with Spivak’s childhood in Kolkata and her description of family affection as a form of “Moral Luck.” Spivak speaks warmly of her parents and extended family. She also recounts the violence around Independence, including her father opening the family home to Muslim neighbours during the riots.
Two formative influences stand out in her account:
- Diocesan Girls’ School, where she credits women teachers as central to her education.
- Presidency College, where she describes intellectual stimulation alongside gendered condescension. In her telling, that treatment left her insecure, and the injury lasted.
The contrast matters for the rest of the interview. The same institutional setting that sharpened her thinking also taught her how it felt to be underestimated as a woman, a theme that returns when she discusses activism and listening.

From Cornell to Derrida: the academic route
Spivak recounts coming to the United States for college in 1961 and moving into comparative literature at Cornell. She says she arrived without sufficient funds and without a work permit. Paul de Man offered her a financial-aid position, which she presents as a practical turning point rather than a planned career step.
The translation of De la grammatologie
While an assistant professor at the University of Iowa, Spivak encountered Derrida’s De la grammatologie in 1967. She proposed translating it with a substantial introduction. In the interview she says the translation and introduction helped make her famous. Katyal adds that this is only part of her reputation, and the rest of the conversation fills in the other parts.
The English edition is usually cited as Of Grammatology. The interview supports the link between that book and Spivak’s translation and introduction, but it does not establish which edition is currently in print.

Reading her own essays critically
One of the more candid stretches of the interview is Spivak’s reassessment of her own earlier work. She does not present her career as a simple rise to academic stardom.

“Three Women’s Texts and a Critique of Imperialism”
Spivak says she attended to colonialism in this essay but missed slavery in her reading of Jane Eyre. Her self-criticism is specific: the omission is an analytical gap she now sees, not a stylistic point.
“Can the Subaltern Speak?”
She describes the essay as an attempt to move beyond being an expert only in French theory and deconstruction. She also says it was published at length even though she had asked an editor to help cut it. The detail shows how far the essay outgrew her own intentions for it, and it is one reason the interview repays a careful read rather than a quick summary of the essay’s famous question.

Translation as labour
Translation appears in the interview both as career history and as a demanding practice. Spivak recounts translating Mahasweta Devi’s “Draupadi” at the request of Ranajit Guha. She states that this work was not central to her international career, a claim that sits alongside her insistence that translation is intimate, laborious reading.
Her most direct formulation is short: “Translation is such a labour.” Read in context, the remark is less a complaint than a method. Translating means reading a text closely enough to live inside it, and that closeness is what she values.

The conversation links activism to listening, and to changing who holds agency in a room. Spivak remembers learning from women workers in Hong Kong. They told her that learning Cantonese would let her approach them in the language of their hearts, and that they knew things about their own lives that she did not. She connects that lesson to her later work with schools.

The Purulia schools grew from her own informal teaching and a suggestion from the activist Prashanta Rakshit. She also describes a complicated relationship with Mahasweta Devi during this period. Spivak says the schools were later closed for political reasons, which forced her to leave the area after twenty years of work. These are her recollections, and the interview does not supply further documentation of the closure.

Katyal asks: “And now that you’re turning 80, what are the things you’re looking forward to?” Spivak lists work she was still pursuing in early 2022:
- finishing a book on W. E. B. Du Bois;
- moving ahead with Bengali bilingual editions of her work;
- continuing the collaborative Radiating Globality project;
- keeping up her work with the schools.
These are intentions stated in 2022. The interview does not confirm whether any of them have been completed or are still active, so readers should not treat them as a current project list. Her closing reflection is personal rather than professional: “Trying to be useful has made me happy.”

Reading the strands together
The interview covers several intellectual and practical strands in one conversation. They are not separate categories, and Spivak moves between them constantly, but it helps to see where each is discussed.
| Strand | What Spivak says | Where it appears |
|---|---|---|
| Translation and deconstruction | Translation of De la grammatologie with introduction; translation as labour and close reading; “Draupadi” | Iowa years; translation section |
| Postcolonial critique | Colonialism addressed, slavery missed in Jane Eyre reading; “Can the Subaltern Speak?” | Critical self-reading section |
| Feminist and labour activism | Learning from women workers in Hong Kong; language as a way to listen | Activism section |
| Educational work in rural communities | Purulia schools; twenty years of work; closure for political reasons | Activism section; closing reflection |
Further reading
Readers who want to follow the interview’s threads can start with three texts it discusses:
- Of Grammatology, the English title associated with Derrida’s De la grammatologie and Spivak’s translation and introduction. Check the current edition before buying, since the interview does not say which one is in print.
- “Can the Subaltern Speak?”, the essay Spivak discusses as an attempt to move beyond French theory. The interview does not name a standalone edition.
- Mahasweta Devi’s “Draupadi”, the text Spivak translated at Ranajit Guha’s request. Confirm the edition and translator details before purchase.
The Bottom Line
The interview is most useful as a first-person map of how Spivak connects translation, critical theory, activism and teaching. Her own verdict on the arc of her life is the sentence she gives at the end: being useful has made her happy.
