Sara Carton was right to say no to Ben Mezzenga at the Love Is Blind Season 8 altar—not because later accounts settle who was at fault, but because she said she still lacked confidence in their communication and understanding of each other’s values. Marriage did not require her to treat unanswered questions as a risk worth taking.
Why did Sara say no to Ben on Love Is Blind?
In a March 7, 2025 interview with Us Weekly, Sara said discussions about religion, politics and other values had not gone far enough for her to feel ready to marry Ben. She felt she was asking questions without getting enough in return. In her view, the issue was not that they had to reach identical conclusions; it was that she did not feel they were having the open, substantive conversations she needed.
At the altar, she was unconvinced that she knew him well enough to make a marriage commitment. That is a sufficient reason to decline. A wedding is not a deadline for someone to override uncertainty, and a partner does not have to prove wrongdoing before the other person can decide they are not ready.

Sara told Us Weekly that an earlier TikTok allegation about Ben’s treatment of an ex raised questions for her about trust and whether he was a safe person to marry. The interview reports Sara’s account; it does not independently establish the allegation. She also emphasized that the concern alone did not determine her decision: she continued the relationship, though the issue affected her and her family.

Information received five days before the wedding
Sara said she received a photo of a business card advertising Ben’s YouTube channel five days before their wedding. She told Us Weekly she did not confront him at the time, but that seeing it added to her sense that something was off. This, too, is her account of what she learned and how she interpreted it—not proof of Ben’s intentions.
These details matter as context for her doubts, not as a verdict on Ben. The clearest basis for her decision remains what she said about their conversations: she wanted to understand his values and did not feel that understanding had developed enough.

Was Sara right to leave Ben at the altar?
Yes, as an editorial judgment based on the reasons she gave. Sara did not need to show that Ben was a bad person or that every concern was proven. She needed to decide whether she felt ready to marry him. Her account describes unresolved questions about trust alongside a persistent lack of clarity on subjects she considered important to a shared life.
TIME’s March 10, 2025 analysis of the reunion framed the disagreement as a demand for open discussion, not a test with one correct answer. TIME reproduced Sara saying: “It’s not necessarily that I was looking for a right or wrong answer,” she said. “I just wanted to have the open discussion. The problem is, out of the pods it just never progressed.” That distinction is important: couples can disagree and still communicate well, but a person may reasonably hesitate when the conversations themselves feel stalled.

TIME also interpreted the reunion’s disputes over LGBTQ rights and other social issues in a broader political context. That is the critic’s analysis of the show, not proof of Ben’s private beliefs. The decision can be understood without claiming to know what he believed or why he acted as he did.

The later breakup accounts conflict. At the reunion, as recapped by Netflix Tudum on April 7, 2025, Sara said Ben dropped her after she moved to Nashville and removed her from Find My Friends. Ben said he thought they had split during their last conversation before her move and understood their later communication differently. Netflix’s December 4, 2025 update later included each person’s longer retrospective account. Those sources preserve two different descriptions; they do not establish one as the proven version.

Netflix’s December 2025 update said Sara had returned to Minneapolis and Ben was single at that time. Those are dated details, not confirmed current status for 2026.

What the altar decision does—and does not—show
- It shows: Sara said she lacked the confidence and clarity she wanted before marriage, especially around values and communication.
- It does not show: that the TikTok allegation was independently verified, that Ben’s intentions are known, or that either person’s account of the later breakup has been proven.
- It supports: the view that declining a marriage can be the responsible choice when one person does not feel ready, even if the reasons are personal and the relationship record is disputed.
