Independence is a novel by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni about three sisters from a Bengali family whose lives are reshaped by India’s independence and the Partition that accompanied it. It is fiction, not a documentary account, but it is built on the period’s political violence and on family memories the author has said informed her research.
What the novel covers
The story follows Priya, Deepa and Jamini, daughters of a doctor in a Bengal village. Their family home begins as a refuge from political upheaval. The author’s official synopsis places the novel during the 1947 Partition, but the timeline is wider than that year. HarperCollins India’s 3 August 2022 announcement starts the story in August 1946 and ties the father’s death to Direct Action Day, the August 1946 violence that marks the opening of the book’s crisis.
According to the Historical Novel Society’s review by Irene Colthurst, the action moves between Ranipur in West Bengal, Calcutta and Philadelphia, across the mid-to-late 1940s and early 1950s, with chapters alternating between the sisters. That structure matters: no single sister carries the book, so the reader sees the same events from three different positions.

Priya: ambition under pressure
Priya is determined to become a doctor, following the path her father’s profession suggests. Her story is the one most directly about a woman’s own ambition, and the publisher’s summary presents it as a drive that the family’s disruption puts at risk.

Deepa: love across a religious divide
Deepa falls in love with a Muslim man, Raza, a Muslim League youth leader in the publisher’s description. Her relationship crosses the religious line that the Partition period hardened, and it leads her to break with her family. Of the three, she is the sister whose personal choice becomes most visibly political.
Jamini: duty and private longing
Jamini helps her mother stitch kanthas and tries to hold the family together while managing her own desires. Her thread through the novel is the one about domestic responsibility, the work that keeps a household functioning when it is coming apart.

How history enters the family
The novel’s central move is to treat national events as domestic events. The father’s death in a riot brings communal violence into the house, and Partition then separates the sisters and puts their bonds under strain. Reviewers who praise the book usually point to this link between the large and the intimate rather than to a sequence of historical scenes.
The author’s family connection
In an interview with Udbhav Seth for the Indian Express, Divakaruni said that stories from her grandfather and mother helped her research. Both were in West Bengal during Partition and were involved with the Gandhian struggle, and her mother was in Kolkata during the 1946 Direct Action Day killings. She explained her purpose in writing the book this way: “One of the reasons I really wanted to write this book is to remind ourselves of how we became independent, which is with Hindus and Muslims and Christians and Parsis fighting side by side.” In the same interview she asked: “When we silence the multiplicity of voices, what are we left with?”

HarperCollins India’s August 2022 announcement offers a more personal framing: “Independence is a novel very close to my heart. My grandfather was involved in the freedom movement, so it is especially meaningful for me.” These are the author’s own accounts. They explain the book’s motives but do not verify its events as history, which is a distinction worth keeping in mind for readers who come to the novel from documentaries about Partition.
How critics read the prose
The praise in the title belongs to one critic. Irene Colthurst, reviewing for the Historical Novel Society, wrote: “The novel’s writing style is deeply lyrical and transportive.” She also praised the characterisation. Scroll.in’s review, which supplied the title’s wording, describes the book as attending to freedom and its price, love and strife, and an arc that bends toward hope.

Critical opinion is not uniform on the prose, so treat the lyrical reading as one reviewer’s judgment rather than a consensus. Readers who want a sense of the book’s range can weigh the characterisation praise and the thematic summaries separately from any verdict on style.

Context for the 75th anniversary
HarperCollins India timed the book to mark 75 years of India’s independence, a publisher’s framing from 2022. The anniversary explains the release, but the novel’s subject, the Partition-era violence and the sisters’ separation, does not depend on that date.
