Pullman’s invented vocabulary feels old and familiar at the same time because he builds it from four kinds of material: classical roots, words borrowed from real languages, plain English compounds used in new senses, and names he finds rather than makes up. Decoding a term means identifying which of these it is, then checking what Pullman has said about it and where the reading becomes your own interpretation.
Sorting Pullman’s words before you decode them
Most of the trilogy’s distinctive terms fall into one of five categories. Knowing the category tells you what kind of evidence to look for: a dictionary and etymology for a borrowing, the author’s own remarks for a deliberate spelling, and literary context for an allusion.
| Term | Category | What the sources establish | What remains interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| dæmon | Spelling that redirects associations | Pullman chose the ae spelling to recall the Greek daimon, a companion spirit or guardian angel, rather than the everyday sense of “demon” (Princeton University Cotsen Children’s Library interview transcript, undated in the source notes) | How closely the fictional dæmons match any specific ancient Greek religious idea |
| alethiometer | Newly coined term with a classical element | Scroll.in (Simon Horobin, 2019) links the first element to Greek aletheia, “truth” | The instrument’s full symbolic role beyond its function as a truth-reading device |
| chocolatl | Word borrowed from a real language | Pullman says he went back to an original language, one of the languages of ancient Mexico (Guardian interview) | Which specific language is not stated in the interview |
| smokeleaf | English compound invented for the purpose | Pullman says he invented an English phrase that explains what the thing is (Guardian interview) | Nothing further; the meaning is transparent from the English parts |
| Serafina Pekkala | Name taken from elsewhere | Pullman says he took the name from the Helsinki telephone directory (Guardian Q&A, 2002) | Whether the name carries any further planned meaning is not stated |
Coinages with classical roots
Dæmon: a spelling that points backward
The most useful entry point is the spelling. In the Princeton interview, Pullman explains: “Well, because that’s the original meaning of the word. And that’s why I spell it in the way I do, D-A-E-M-O-N, rather than D-E-M-O-N.” He identifies the Greek word as daimon and describes it as a “companion spirit or guardian angel even, you could say.” He adds: “They’re an important part of ourselves.”
The practical lesson for readers is that spelling can reset the associations a word brings. A reader who meets “demon” expects malice; Pullman’s spelling asks for something closer to an inner companion. What the author does not claim is that his fictional dæmons reproduce any one ancient belief. The echo is intentional, but the ancient word itself had a long and varied history, and the novel draws on a selection of it.

Alethiometer: an instrument named for truth
Horobin’s Scroll.in article treats alethiometer as one of Pullman’s coinages and connects its first element to Greek aletheia, “truth.” In the story, Lyra reads the instrument’s symbols to determine what is true. Calling it simply a compass is the common shortcut, but it hides the device’s interpretive role: it answers questions rather than indicating direction.
The title problem adds a second layer. The first volume is Northern Lights in the UK and The Golden Compass in the US. The University of Oxford’s 2021 teaching pack for the trilogy discusses “golden compasses” in relation to the US title and the alethiometer. Readers who meet the object under either name are meeting the same instrument, but the US title pushes attention toward navigation in a way the UK title does not, so it is worth noting which edition you are reading when you compare discussions.
Borrowed words and invented compounds
Pullman describes two methods side by side, and the contrast is useful for decoding the vocabulary of other worlds in the books.

Chocolatl: a word taken from another language
In one interview Pullman says: “In some cases (such as chocolatl) I went back to the original language, which in that case was one of the languages of ancient Mexico.” The effect is to make the setting feel grounded in a real, non-European history. The interview does not identify which ancient Mexican language supplied the word, so a reader should not name one on the strength of that source alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSmokeleaf: an English phrase that explains itself
For contrast, Pullman says: “In others (like smokeleaf) I invented an English phrase that . . . well, explained what it was. You can play about a lot with English.” Here the reader gets the thing and its description in one move. The method signals that the world is different without requiring a glossary.
Horobin’s article also discusses chthonic, glossed as “underground,” as an example of classical-root vocabulary that gives the prose its texture. Because the word is built from familiar Greek material, a reader who recognises the root can often infer the meaning from the sentence around it.

Names: meaningful to Pullman, not always decodable
In a 2002 Guardian Q&A, Pullman says: “Names are very important, you’re right. Sometimes they just come to me, and other times I have to find them from somewhere else. I got Serafina Pekkala’s name from the Helsinki telephone directory, for instance.” The answer is useful precisely because it refuses a single method. Some names arrive whole; others are sourced from ordinary life.
A later interview adds that it is rare for a really important character to arrive without a name. That remark shows that naming matters to the author, but it does not establish that every name hides an etymology or a cipher. A reader who searches each name for a secret message will usually find a reading that the author never claimed.
Literary context: Milton, Blake and the trilogy title
The Oxford teaching pack points readers toward two literary frames. The first is Milton’s Paradise Lost, and in particular the phrase “his dark materials to create more worlds,” which the pack highlights in its discussion of the trilogy’s title. The pack suggests comparing Milton’s rebellion, the bridges between worlds, and the imagery of creation with Pullman’s story.

The second frame is William Blake. The pack identifies Blake’s cosmology and his attitudes toward organised religion and free thought as influences worth considering alongside Pullman’s own views. These are reading contexts rather than proof of a source for any particular term. They are most useful when they explain a theme, such as creation or the authority of institutions, and least useful when they are used to assign each word a fixed meaning.

Before you state a decoding as fact, check which of these categories it falls into:
- Author-stated: Pullman has explained the choice directly, as with the dæmon spelling and the chocolatl and smokeleaf method.
- Source-supported: an outside scholar or reference makes a specific claim, as Horobin does for aletheia and chthonic.
- Contextual reading: a literary parallel, such as Milton or Blake, that illuminates a theme but was not confirmed as a source.
- Open: questions the author has left unresolved. Pullman says the daemon idea simply came to him and that he cannot be more specific, so discussion of its origin should stay at the level of symbolism.
On dæmon symbolism, Pullman has said that a dæmon’s settled animal form “symbolises an aspect of their personality. But our personalities have many aspects, and it might be a surprising one.” He also says he does not know everything there is to know about dæmons. That combination makes a useful rule: interpret the symbol freely, but label it as your reading when the author has not confirmed it.

For a film or television viewer, the same method applies. A word that sounds ancient may come from a borrowed language, an English compound, or a name taken from a phone book, and each category carries different confidence.
