Why the Kantara chapter numbering can be confusing
The numbering reflects the story’s chronology, not the films’ release order. The 2022 Kantara came first in cinemas. In 2023, Shetty described a planned prequel as “Part 1” even though the original film had already been released. That prequel was subsequently titled Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1, released in 2025. Chapter 2 was then revealed at its ending.

In 2023, Shetty said, “What you have seen is actually Part 2, Part 1 will come next year.” He was referring to the prequel project that became Chapter 1, not offering a plot clue for the newly revealed Chapter 2. The films draw on a coastal forest setting and on ancestral deities central to the community depicted on screen. The Central Board of Film Certification’s record for KANTARA A LEGEND CHAPTER 1 describes a forest-side community near India’s coast and worship of deities passed down from ancestors in the form of stones. Coverage of the original Kantara also describes Bhootha Kola as a traditional dance for a deity. That concise journalistic description helps explain a cultural reference in the film, but it should not be taken as a full explanation of Bhootha Kola, the different daivas, or the practices and beliefs of every community.
