Hungry Humans is Sudha G Tilak’s English translation of Karichan Kunju’s 1978 Tamil novel Pasitha Manidam. Its central claim, as argued by reviewer Aishwarya Dani in Scroll.in in June 2022, is that the lives of its characters are shaped more by chance and by the deliberate actions of other people than by personal choice. This article explains the book, the reviewer’s reading of it, and the passages that support that reading.

What the book is

  • Title: Hungry Humans, translated from Tamil by Sudha G Tilak.
  • Original title: Pasitha Manidam.
  • Author: Karichan Kunju.
  • Original publication year: 1978, as stated in the 2022 review’s subtitle.
  • Edition: the review’s photo caption identifies the edition as Penguin Viking.

The book is a novel. It is not a documentary, and the sources discussed here cover only its text and its reception in one review and one published excerpt.

The two lives at the centre

Dani describes the protagonists, Ganesan and Kitta, as lightly entwined characters who come from the same heavily Brahminical village of Kumbakonam. Their paths touch without the novel building them into a single shared plot. The reader follows each life closely enough to see how small events and other people’s decisions redirect it.

Where chance and other people enter

The published excerpt, run by Scroll.in on April 18, 2022 and described as excerpted with permission from the Penguin Viking edition, gives the clearest concrete picture of the constraints the review has in mind. It is a partial view of the novel, not a summary of the whole.

Studying away from home

Ganesan is studying away from home and has trouble fitting into school. He has little adult support, so the ordinary structures that might carry a young person through a difficult period are largely absent.

Depending on the chatram

He relies on the chatram for both food and lodging. His survival in this period therefore depends on an institution and on the goodwill of those who run it, not on any plan he has made for himself.

Returning home and the offer of housing

He cannot return to his village without facing heckling. Singam Rauth, a figure of wealth and institutional standing, offers housing, and that offer becomes part of the situation in which Ganesan makes his decisions. The excerpt frames this as a choice made inside limits set by others, which is the core of the review’s argument.

The review’s reading

Dani reads the novel as showing how chance and the deliberate actions of people shape a life. She places it against conservative social structures, rigid hierarchy and limited compassion. She also notes that the book is not simply framed as a call to arms, so readers should not expect a political manifesto.

Ritual and daily routine

According to the review, the novel repeatedly attends to rites and rituals, including the application of vibhuti and the food served at meals. Dani describes the prose as quiet, restrained and sometimes mechanical, with daily routine gradually numbing anxiety. In her account, these repeated details are how the book shows constraint rather than dramatic turning points.

No conventional climax

The narrative does not build toward a conventional climax. It ends with the two characters entering middle age. Readers who expect a decisive confrontation or resolution should know that the book works through accumulation rather than payoff.

Ganesan’s later life

The review also describes Ganesan as later resigning himself to life on the street after being abandoned by a society prejudiced against his leprosy. This detail comes from Dani’s account; the excerpt does not cover it.

Reading the title’s claim carefully

The phrase “the myth of personal choice” is the reviewer’s interpretation of the novel. It is not a general finding about human decision-making, and neither the review nor the excerpt presents any study or statistic to support a broader claim. Treat the title as a lens on this book, and check it against the passages above.

Edition and sources

The review and the excerpt are the two sources used here. The review is at Scroll.in’s review by Aishwarya Dani, published June 12, 2022. The excerpt is at Scroll.in’s excerpt, published April 18, 2022. Format, ISBN and current availability of the Penguin Viking edition are not stated in either source, so check a bookseller or the publisher before buying.
