Amitav Ghosh’s Ghost-Eye follows a child in 1969 Calcutta who insists she remembers another life, and a later generation drawn into the environmental activists’ interest in her case. The novel links intimate memory and food to ecological crisis and forces beyond ordinary human explanation. “Environmental uncanny” is a critical framing of that project—not a settled genre label or proof that the book’s supernatural possibilities are real.

What is Ghost-Eye about?

The novel opens in Calcutta in September 1969. Three-year-old Varsha Gupta, raised in a strictly vegetarian household, says she remembers a previous life and asks for fish. Her family turns to Dr. Shoma Bose, a psychologist who has investigated cases described as “cases of the reincarnation type.” The publisher’s synopsis presents Varsha’s claim as the event that sets the story in motion; it does not establish that her memories are objectively verified. (Macmillan’s U.S. edition listing)

About half a century later, Varsha’s case file draws the attention of environmental activists. Dinu, Shoma’s nephew, becomes involved in their plans, and buried memories surface in his own life. The narrative moves between late-1960s Calcutta and present-day Brooklyn. Scroll’s review adds that Dinu is a semi-retired antiquarian helping arrange care for his elderly aunt in Kolkata, while Tipu, a character from Ghosh’s Gun Island, works with an NGO in the Sundarbans. What does “environmental uncanny” mean here?

Scroll uses the phrase to describe Ghosh’s effort to bring non-human forces and beings into the center of a novel about ecological disruption. The idea is connected to Ghosh’s longstanding concern that realist fiction can struggle to represent events that feel improbable or exceed the scale of ordinary human experience, a concern he explored in The Great Derangement (2016). Scroll places Ghost-Eye in a continuing literary project that also includes The Hungry Tide and Gun Island. (Scroll)

In this framing, the uncanny is not simply a ghost or eerie effect added to an otherwise conventional story. It includes the possibility that human lives are entangled with non-human presences and ecological forces that familiar realist storytelling may marginalize. That is an interpretation of the novel’s literary ambition, not evidence that reincarnation or spiritual perception has been scientifically demonstrated.

Why do memory, food, and non-human life matter?

Varsha’s demand for fish makes food an early point of contact between personal memory and relationships with other beings. At a January 2026 launch conversation with writer Keshava Guha, Ghosh described that connection this way: “Food is the essential way in which we as humans relate to the earth, relate to other beings and relate to each other,” (The Indian Express). The remark offers a useful lens for the novel’s premise: an apparently private childhood claim becomes a question about how people understand their place in the wider living world.

Ghosh has also been careful not to present his interest in past-life memories as a fixed belief system. In a May 2026 interview with Bloomberg, he said: “I don’t like to use the word reincarnation, because you are implying there’s a whole cycle of karma and so on. Maybe that exists. I just don’t know about that. I’m agnostic.” (Bloomberg) That is the author’s stated position, not a scientific conclusion about Varsha or reincarnation.

Does the novel reinvent the form?

Its formal ambition is to make family memory, an apparent past-life recollection, environmental activism, and non-human forces part of one narrative rather than keeping ecological crisis at the margins. Scroll’s reviewer, Sanjay Sipahimalani, sees that ambition but argues that it is sometimes undercut by familiar realist techniques and a declarative style. That is one reviewer’s assessment—not a consensus verdict—and it points to the central tension in the book’s project: whether established narrative methods can accommodate the uncanny scale of ecological change.
