The prize’s announcement names Raising Hare as the category winner and lists Intertidal among the highly commended books.
What Intertidal is about
The Wainwright Prize’s book page presents Intertidal as a work about beaches, marshes and “wild places of the mind.” It describes the book as connecting nature’s healing power with reclaiming a colonised ecology, and as an invitation to reconsider inherited political and cultural values it characterises as ecologically disastrous. Those are the prize page’s descriptions of the book’s themes, rather than an independently established critical consensus.
The publisher’s synopsis offers examples of the natural and human worlds the book explores: frog calls at night, butterflies far out at sea, longshore currents, worms’ role in composting, and communities defending the homes of coastal inhabitants, human and non-human. Together, these details point to a work concerned not only with coastal nature, but also with the relationships and conflicts shaping life along the shore.
What the award recognition means
The Wainwright Prize’s official winners announcement distinguishes the category winner from the highly commended titles: Raising Hare won the Nature Writing category, while Intertidal received highly commended recognition. The announcement says the winners were announced on 10 September 2025 and is dated 11 September 2025.
