James Pickens Jr., who plays Dr. Richard Webber on Grey’s Anatomy, disclosed that he had prostate cancer. ABC News reported on November 16, 2025, that he underwent surgery and later said he was cancer-free. That was an update at the time; the report does not establish his health status today.
What cancer did James Pickens Jr. have?
Pickens disclosed a prostate cancer diagnosis in a public service announcement and an interview with Black Health Matters, according to ABC News. ABC reported that his physician monitored his prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in 2024 and again in January 2025. After his PSA rose, he was referred to a urologist for further evaluation.
As ABC reported the account, an MRI showed a suspicious area, a biopsy found a tumor, and a PET scan indicated that the cancer had not spread beyond one part of his prostate. These details were attributed to Black Health Matters and Pickens, rather than to an independently reviewed medical record.
What treatment did he choose, and what did he say afterward?
Pickens said he chose a radical prostatectomy, an operation to remove the prostate. He told Black Health Matters, as quoted by ABC: “We caught it really early, and so they thought that would be the best route to take. I do have a rare variant that you don’t see very often. They wanted to err on the side of caution and keep an eye on it.” The report did not identify the variant, so its type and significance cannot be inferred from that statement.

ABC also reported that Pickens later posted: “Hi Friends, I’m blessed and grateful to be cancer-free. Thanks so much for all the love and support! Get checked!” This describes what he shared at that time, not a current clinical assessment.
Why did Pickens say his family history mattered?
Pickens said prostate cancer ran in his family, naming his father and several of his father’s brothers. In the interview quoted by ABC, he said: “It’s not the kind of news anyone wants to hear, but to be honest, prostate cancer has run through my family. My father had it. He had a lot of brothers; several of them had it. I would have been surprised if I hadn’t gotten it.”

Family history is one of the risk factors identified by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), alongside older age and African American race. A family history can be relevant to a person’s screening discussion, but Pickens’s experience does not establish a screening schedule for everyone.
How should readers think about prostate cancer screening?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises people to discuss the potential benefits and harms of prostate cancer screening with a doctor. The CDC notes that most prostate cancers grow slowly and do not cause health problems. Screening is therefore a decision to weigh, not a guarantee of better outcomes.

The USPSTF’s final recommendation dated May 8, 2018, says men aged 55 to 69 should make an individual decision about periodic PSA-based screening after discussing possible benefits and harms with a clinician. The USPSTF page says the recommendation is being updated; the 2018 guidance and estimates below should not be mistaken for a newer recommendation.
In its 2018 recommendation, the USPSTF estimated that screening programs for men aged 55 to 69 might prevent approximately 1.3 prostate cancer deaths over about 13 years per 1,000 men screened, and might prevent approximately 3 cases of metastatic prostate cancer per 1,000 men screened. The same recommendation describes possible harms including false-positive results, follow-up biopsies, overdiagnosis, overtreatment, and treatment complications. These published figures are from 2018, not newly calculated estimates.
