Yes, if you can tolerate a slow, claustrophobic film. Gali Guleiyan is a fiction feature, not a documentary, but it is built on the kind of close observation of an urban neighborhood that documentary viewers tend to appreciate. Its strongest asset is Manoj Bajpayee, whose restrained performance is the element critics single out most often. The film’s atmosphere is equally distinctive and equally likely to divide viewers.
What the film is
Gali Guleiyan is a 2018 Indian psychological drama directed by Dipesh Jain. Outside India it is known as In the Shadows, and readers searching for it under either title will find the same film. The Mumbai Film Festival (MAMI) 2017 catalogue lists Jain as director, names the principal cast, and identifies the film as his debut feature. The Prime Video title page credits Bajpayee alongside Shahana Goswami, Ranvir Shorey and Neeraj Kabi.
The premise, without the ending
Prime Video describes a reclusive shopkeeper in Old Delhi who watches the neighborhood’s lanes through hidden cameras. When he hears a boy being beaten, he sets out to find the child. The alleys around him and his own memories blur together, and his grip on what is real begins to slip. The film’s structure keeps the viewer close to that uncertainty, so the question of what actually happened carries as much weight as the search itself.
The word “redemption” in the headline is the editorial framing of this piece rather than a claim made by the reviews. The critics quoted below describe trauma, isolation and a search for truth. None of them describes a simple redemption arc, and whether the ending offers any sense of resolution depends on how much you are willing to read into a deliberately unsettled story.

Why Bajpayee’s performance stands out
Nandini Ramnath, writing for Scroll.in on September 7, 2018, called the film a “superbly performed and visually arresting portrait of loneliness and claustrophobia.” She also found weak sections in the film and argued that Bajpayee’s work carries much of the weight when the screenplay falters. That is a useful way to think about the lead: his performance is praised as the reason the film holds together, not as a substitute for a flawless script.
The performance is physically restrained. NDTV’s 2018 review, which gives the film 4/5, notes that the character’s inner distress comes through gestures and silences as much as through dialogue. Bajpayee’s own description of the project, in an interview with Alaka Sahani published in The Indian Express on August 26, 2018, points in the same direction. He said: “This is a movie which matters a lot to me, and I have worked on it knowing well that it’s going to take a lot out of me as an actor and an individual.” That is a statement about his commitment and the effort he expected to make. It is not evidence of any particular effect on him.

Craft: atmosphere, pacing and where it divides viewers
Atmosphere
The film’s Old Delhi setting is not decorative. Hindustan Times’ September 8, 2018 review centers the claustrophobic mood and describes Bajpayee’s work as bravura. Scroll.in describes the film through violence, loneliness and psychological imprisonment, and ties those themes to the lanes themselves. Times of India’s Renuka Vyavahare, in a review dated October 6, 2018, praises the editing and cinematography and reads the film through psychological isolation and parent-child disconnection. Treat that as one critic’s interpretation rather than a settled reading.
Pacing
The film moves slowly and builds its mood gradually. That is the main caveat. Viewers expecting a conventional thriller rhythm may find long stretches frustrating, and the austere style is likely to feel oppressive rather than immersive for some audiences. Critics who admire the film tend to treat this as a deliberate choice; critics who are less convinced tend to point to the weaker stretches of the screenplay.

Ambiguity versus payoff
The film asks you to live inside the protagonist’s uncertainty. Whether that feels like a rewarding psychological puzzle or an unresolved one is the central judgment a viewer has to make. Reviewers who praise the film do so partly because it refuses easy explanation. Viewers who want a clear explanatory payoff will be the most likely to come away dissatisfied.

The Bottom Line
Watch Gali Guleiyan for Manoj Bajpayee’s controlled, physically restrained performance and for its oppressive sense of place. The critics quoted here agree on the performance and mostly agree that the film’s pacing and ambiguity are the main obstacles. If you can accept a slow, unsettled story, it rewards close attention; if you need a clear plot and a tidy resolution, it will likely frustrate you.
