“Hairy girl summer” refers to women sharing social-media posts that show or embrace body hair and question the expectation that women should be hairless. The phrase was covered as a trend in October 2023; the available reporting does not establish who coined it, how widespread it became, or whether it is taking off in 2026. Its central point is choice: growing or removing body hair is personal.
What does “hairy girl summer” mean?
In an October 5, 2023 report, PerthNow described “hairy girl summer” as a social-media spin on “hot girl summer”: women posting about or showing body hair as a way to normalise it. The report presents the trend as a challenge to the idea that women are expected to remove hair.
The report does not identify the phrase’s origin or measure participation. It is evidence of coverage at that time, not proof that the trend is currently growing. PerthNow’s October 2023 report quotes Spanish influencer Calita Fire reflecting on the shame attached to body hair: “We were just kids shaving so much of our bodies for so many years, thinking it was gross and shameful to have what is utterly normal and natural.” That is Fire’s personal view, not a finding about all women.
Why do some women choose to keep body hair?
The influencers quoted in the PerthNow report describe rejecting shame and deciding for themselves what feels feminine or attractive. Australian influencer Bella Davis, for example, said she had felt insecure about toe hair and feet because she was told they were not feminine or attractive, and that she came to see femininity as something she could define for herself.

These accounts illustrate individual motivations, not a consensus. Some people may choose not to shave to question a beauty expectation; others remove hair because they prefer the look or feel. Neither choice, by itself, determines someone’s values or wellbeing.
What do surveys say about hair removal?
A U.S. national panel survey offers a narrow snapshot of pubic-hair practices, not a measure of women’s body-hair habits overall. Its 522 respondents were women ages 18–85, surveyed in Spring 2023. Most said they had removed pubic hair at some point, and nearly half said they had done so in the preceding month. The study reports these proportions in words rather than giving a precise percentage in its abstract.

Respondents cited motivations including feeling cleaner, feeling more comfortable, and swimsuit appearance. Practices and preferences varied. Because the survey concerns pubic hair in women in the United States, it cannot establish what women generally do about leg, underarm, or other body hair, or what is preferred elsewhere. There is no sound basis for saying that “hairy girl summer” improves body image—or that social media uniformly makes it worse. A 2026 Australian online questionnaire study examined 282 women ages 17–30 and reported associations between social-media use, appearance comparison, and internalisation of the thin ideal. Use of image-based platforms was associated with several appearance-related outcomes and anxiety, but not with body dissatisfaction.

The study did not examine “hairy girl summer.” Its observational findings show associations, not that social-media use caused the outcomes or that this particular trend changes how people feel about their bodies. How to read the trend without turning it into a rule
- It is a message about permission, not a grooming prescription. The 2023 report’s advocates challenge the expectation that women must remove hair; it does not establish that everyone should grow it.
- Personal preference and social pressure can coexist. A person may remove hair for comfort or appearance, or keep it while questioning an expectation. A single choice does not tell the whole story.
- Do not treat a viral-looking post as a population statistic. The report describes social-media content but does not quantify participation or establish its scale today.
