The same announcement added Indira Varma, Ashley Walters, and Tom Hollander to the cast. As of October 8, 2026, no premiere date has been published in the HBO announcements or industry listings covered here, and the new actors’ Season 2 character names have not been disclosed.
What HBO confirmed
HBO’s first-party release is the controlling source for the production facts. It states that production “has commenced on the eight-episode second season of HBO Original drama series DUNE: PROPHECY, from showrunner Alison Schapker.” The release names three filming countries and three new cast members. It does not give character names for the newcomers, and it does not include a premiere window.
| Detail | What is established | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Season length | Eight episodes | HBO release, November 11, 2025 |
| Filming countries | Hungary, Jordan, and Spain | HBO release, November 11, 2025 |
| New cast | Indira Varma, Ashley Walters, Tom Hollander | HBO release, November 11, 2025 |
| Season 2 character names for new cast | Not stated in the announcement | HBO release, November 11, 2025 |
| Production phase | Principal photography complete; season in post-production | Production List (Film & Television Industry Alliance directory), April 28, 2026 update |
| Filming locations beyond countries | Budapest, Hungary, and one other location listed as TBA | Production List, April 28, 2026 update |
| Premiere date | Not stated in the HBO release or the April 28, 2026 directory update | Checked as of October 8, 2026 |
The Production List entry is secondary industry tracking. It is useful for the dated production status, but it does not replace HBO’s three-country announcement, and its “TBA” location entry means the specific shooting sites beyond Budapest are not public.
How the season got here
- December 19, 2024: HBO announced the Season 2 renewal ahead of the Season 1 finale. Its release said the first Season 1 episode had drawn approximately 15 million viewers across Max territories. That is HBO’s own approximate figure, not an independently audited audience measure.
- November 11, 2025: HBO announced that Season 2 production had commenced, along with the eight-episode order, the filming countries, and the three casting additions.
- April 28, 2026: The Production List directory recorded principal photography as complete and the season in post-production.
- As of October 8, 2026: No premiere date has been published in the sources covered here. Post-production status alone does not establish a release window, so readers should not infer one from the filming timeline.
The new cast and the “Game of Thrones” and “White Lotus” link
The headline’s franchise references are discovery hooks drawn from contemporary coverage. That coverage associates Indira Varma with Game of Thrones and Tom Hollander with The White Lotus. HBO’s release is the source for their Dune: Prophecy casting, and it does not say what roles they play. Nothing in the announcement indicates that either actor is reprising a prior character.
#1 Best Overall
- Runtime: 390 minutes
Ashley Walters is announced in the same release, but the material covered here does not link him to a prior HBO title, so the article does not make that connection. Until HBO or Max publishes character details, the honest framing is that all three are new to the Dune: Prophecy cast as announced.
What the series is and where it comes from
HBO’s official logline reads: “DUNE: PROPHECY follows two Harkonnen sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind, and establish the fabled order that will become known as the Bene Gesserit.” HBO places the story around 10,000 years before Paul Atreides, the figure at the center of the Dune novels.
Rank #2
- Emily Watson, Olivia Williams, Mark Strong, Jodhi May, Travis Fimmel
HBO’s renewal release describes the series as inspired by Sisterhood of Dune by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. “Inspired by” is the accurate phrase; the official materials do not describe the show as a direct adaptation of that book.
The November 2025 release also noted that Season 1 received four Emmy nominations.

What to watch for next
The next confirmable milestones are an official premiere date, the character names for Varma, Walters, and Hollander, and any HBO or Max confirmation of the filming locations beyond the three countries. Until one of those appears in an HBO or Max source, treat any specific release month or character role circulating online as unverified.
If you want to check status yourself, HBO’s press materials and the Max service are the places where a premiere date would first be announced.

Taken together, the verified picture is short but firm: an eight-episode second season, filmed in Hungary, Jordan, and Spain, with three new cast members, and a production phase that has moved into post-production with no premiere date yet public.
