Elio opened to about $21 million in the United States and Canada over the June 20, 2025 weekend, the lowest domestic opening in Pixar history at the time. The result measures theatrical ticket sales, not the film’s critical reception: Disney described Elio as Certified Fresh, and Rotten Tomatoes’ live page lists an 83% Tomatometer and 89% Popcornmeter as of October 8, 2026.
Was Elio Pixar’s lowest opening weekend?
Yes, by domestic opening-weekend receipts at the time of its June 2025 release. The Associated Press reported an estimated $21 million for the United States and Canada and described it as Pixar’s lowest opening ever then. The Numbers records the weekend at $20,840,667; that database figure is more precise, while AP’s figure is a rounded estimate. Neither figure is a worldwide debut or adjusted for inflation. AP’s June 22, 2025 report also notes that Pixar’s previous low opening was Elemental, at $29.6 million.

The record is time-bound: it describes the films released by Pixar through Elio’s opening in June 2025, not a claim that no later Pixar release has since opened lower. Comparing nominal openings across decades also has limits. AP notes that Toy Story opened to $29.1 million in 1995, equivalent to $60 million after inflation adjustment.
What does Certified Fresh mean—and what are Elio’s Rotten Tomatoes scores?
“Certified Fresh” is a Rotten Tomatoes critics’ classification; it does not measure ticket sales. Disney called Elio Certified Fresh in a September 17, 2025 press item. Rotten Tomatoes’ live title page listed an 83% Tomatometer from 230 reviews and an 89% Popcornmeter from more than 2,500 verified ratings when accessed October 8, 2026. These are current page figures, not a snapshot of the scores on opening weekend, and they can change as ratings are added or updated. See the live Rotten Tomatoes page for Elio.

- For centuries, people have called out to the universe looking for answers - in Disney and Pixar's all-new feature film Elio, the universe calls back!
- Tomatometer: critics’ reviews.
- Popcornmeter: verified audience ratings.
The two measures answer different questions. A strong critics’ classification can coexist with a low opening because the badge reflects reviews, not the number of people who bought tickets that weekend.
How did the opening compare with Elio’s eventual theatrical gross?
Rotten Tomatoes lists Elio’s U.S. gross as $73.0 million. That is a domestic theatrical figure, not the worldwide total. The opening-weekend figure and the later gross describe different points in the run: the former is the first weekend in the United States and Canada; the latter is the listed U.S. theatrical gross. The Numbers’ title page also reports a $150 million production budget. Comparing that budget directly with a gross does not establish whether the film made or lost money: the budget is not a complete account of total costs, and gross receipts do not show marketing expenses, distribution terms, or other accounting.

Why was Elio’s opening so low?
The cited opening-weekend reporting establishes the size of the debut, but it does not establish a definitive cause. Competition, marketing, audience awareness, release strategy, and changes during production should not be presented as explanations without supporting evidence. AP quoted David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm FranchiseRe, describing the result as “a weak opening for a new Pixar movie.”
AP also noted that Elemental, Pixar’s prior low-opening comparison, went on to reach $496.4 million worldwide, and pointed to Elio’s strong reviews as a possible factor in whether its run might lengthen. That earlier film’s trajectory is context, not proof that Elio would follow the same pattern.
