During Emilia Pérez’s 2024 awards-season promotion, Karla Sofía Gascón spoke about facing anti-trans hostility and her determination to oppose it. She also made an important distinction: she represents herself, not every trans person.
What Karla Sofía Gascón said about hate
In an interview with Out at the Los Angeles premiere of Emilia Pérez, published October 22, 2024, Gascón described resisting hostility toward trans people: “I love to fight versus the hate, versus the people that hate on others just because we exist.” She added, “They need to live in a world in peace with the respect for each other.”

Her remarks describe her response to hate directed at people for being who they are. They do not establish that every negative reaction to the film or to her performance was anti-trans.
Why she cautioned against treating her as a stand-in
Gascón acknowledged that the role brought increased visibility and that visibility could bring more hate. But she did not claim to speak for all trans people. In the same Out interview, she said: “I think that at the end, I only represent myself.” She framed her work as one contribution to bringing trans stories to screens and making trans lives more familiar, rather than as a single definitive account of trans experience.

How Emilia Pérez brought her into the spotlight
In Jacques Audiard’s musical crime drama, Gascón plays Emilia and the character’s pre-transition identity, Manitas. At the film’s Cannes premiere in 2024, she explained that she had initially wanted to play Emilia alone before deciding she could portray both identities, according to the Associated Press.
The film’s Cannes recognition preceded her October interviews. The cast shared the festival’s Best Actress prize, and the film received the Jury Prize. In an acceptance speech described by The Guardian on October 18, Gascón addressed insults, denigration, and violence against trans people.

What her remarks do—and do not—claim
Gascón’s statements speak to her own experience and opposition to anti-trans hate. In an Associated Press interview, she put her position in terms of equal treatment: “Trans people should be treated like just anybody else. I’m not better or worse than anyone else. I think we should be taken for what we are.”

- Her position: She opposed hatred directed at people simply because they exist and called for respect.
- Her scope: She said she represents herself, not all trans people.
