Starting Friday, April 19, 2024, IMAX ran the film for two additional weeks in the format’s top 20 markets across North America. That window closed long ago. Whether you can see the film in IMAX today depends on your city and the date, so the only reliable check is a current local listing, which is covered below.
What the 2024 extension actually covered
IMAX announced the extension in spring 2024. Its scope was defined by market, not by every auditorium: the two extra weeks applied to the top 20 IMAX markets in North America. The announcement does not establish that every IMAX venue in those markets took part, so readers should not assume a particular cinema showed the film in IMAX during that period.

The extension also needs to be separated from the film’s broader IMAX presence. IMAX said the movie was shot entirely with IMAX digital cameras, and it described several presentation formats. Those formats were tied to specific locations, not to the whole network.
Which formats were described, and where
IMAX’s 2024 format report identified three presentation types. They are not interchangeable, and none of them was described as available at every IMAX theatre.
#1 Best Overall
| Format | What IMAX said (2024) | Where it was offered |
|---|---|---|
| IMAX digital, expanded 1.90:1 presentation | Expanded aspect ratio on digitally captured footage | Select locations; a full venue list is not stated in IMAX’s report |
| IMAX 1.43:1 presentation | Expanded aspect ratio presentation | Select locations; a full venue list is not stated in IMAX’s report |
| IMAX 15/70mm film | Film-based presentation | 12 select locations worldwide, not stated individually in the material reviewed |
For any specific screening, compare the actual venue’s listed format rather than inferring it from the film’s title. A theatre that sells an IMAX ticket may still show a different aspect ratio from the one you expect, or may not offer 70mm at all.
The later Los Angeles return engagement
Warner Bros. Pictures announced a separate Los Angeles return engagement for October 20–25, 2024. The IMAX presentations were listed at AMC Burbank, AMC Century City, AMC Topanga and AMC Universal City. Those dates have passed, and the announcement does not show whether any of those venues is screening the film now.

How to check whether you can see it in IMAX today
Because the 2024 announcements do not reflect current programming, use the following process before you plan a trip:
- Search the theatre chain’s site or app for Dune: Part Two and choose your city and date.
- Open the showtime details and read the format label. Look for IMAX, and for any note about 1.43:1 or 70mm.
- Confirm the auditorium before buying. Format labels are attached to individual screens, so a multiplex can offer IMAX on one screen and standard projection on another.
- If you want 70mm specifically, check the venue’s own listing or call the box office. Film presentations are limited, and availability can change without notice.
- If no IMAX showtime appears, the film may still be playing in standard or premium formats. Those listings are not the same as an IMAX engagement.
Box office figures and what they measure
The following numbers come from the organizations that published them, and each one describes a specific period:

- IMAX reported $27.7 million in global box office for the film’s second weekend, in figures published on March 11, 2024. The IMAX share of the global weekend total was 22%, drawn from 1,600 IMAX locations.
- Warner Bros. Pictures said the film had earned “more than $714 million” worldwide in its initial theatrical run. That is a 2024 cumulative figure for the release period, not a current total.
These numbers show how the film performed in its original release. They do not indicate how many people are watching it in IMAX now.
What IMAX and Denis Villeneuve said
IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond framed the extension as a strong commercial result. In IMAX’s release he said: “It’s clear that IMAX continues to anchor the incredible run of ‘Dune: Part Two’, as we capture a record share of the film’s box office thanks to legions of fans worldwide unwilling to settle for anything less than the IMAX Experience.”

Director and co-writer Denis Villeneuve commented on the later Los Angeles return. He said: “It is a thrill for me to be able to share ‘Dune: Part Two’ once again with audiences on the big screen, as I intended the film to be experienced, and thank everyone who has taken the time to come see ‘Dune: Part One’ and ‘Part Two’ in a theatre.”
