Netflix lists the show as a 2024 title. It follows a puppeteer in 1980s New York whose young son disappears, and the desperate effort to bring a monster puppet the boy drew onto television.
Is Benedict Cumberbatch returning to TV with Eric?
The wording “return to TV” can suggest an upcoming project, but Eric is already a released limited series. Netflix’s catalogue identifies it as a 2024 title, and Netflix’s UK catalogue lists it for streaming in that region. That listing does not establish availability in every country. Netflix’s official sources do not describe a new season or another forthcoming Cumberbatch project under the title Eric.

What is Eric about?
Set in 1980s New York, the series begins when nine-year-old Edgar Anderson disappears on his way to school. His father, Vincent, is a leading puppeteer and creator of the fictional children’s program Good Day Sunshine. As Vincent becomes increasingly distressed, he fixates on getting Eric—a blue monster puppet based on Edgar’s drawings—onto the show, hoping his son will see it and come home.
The story puts a family’s crisis alongside the world of children’s television. Creator and writer Abi Morgan described it as “a dark and crazy journey into the heart of 1980’s New York” and the world of Vincent, “a genius puppeteer on one of America’s leading kids TV shows” in Netflix’s February 2023 cast announcement. Morgan has also described Good Day Sunshine as a “nod to Sesame Street,” while emphasizing the absurdity, rivalry, and seriousness of the children’s television world.
