Spoilers for all seven episodes. Catherine Ravenscroft tells the truth in the finale: Jonathan Brigstocke forced his way into her hotel room and sexually assaulted her. The photographs Nancy later used to suggest an affair were evidence of that assault, not proof of a romance. Catherine’s guilt is separate: after Jonathan helped rescue her son Nicholas from the sea, she saw Jonathan struggling in the water and did not save him.
What really happened between Catherine and Jonathan?
Nancy Brigstocke’s book presents Catherine as Jonathan’s lover and blames her for his death. That account is false. In the finale, Catherine tells Stephen that Jonathan entered her hotel room and assaulted her. The intimate photographs were taken in connection with that attack; they do not establish a consensual relationship. Alfonso Cuarón confirmed that the images were evidence of a horrific crime against Catherine, not signs of an affair (Vanity Fair, November 11, 2024).
The series has encouraged viewers to treat the book’s allegations and Stephen’s suspicions as facts. Cuarón said he and Cate Blanchett worked from the principle of “not to mislead audiences,” adding that on a second viewing “everything is out in the open.” The reveal changes how earlier scenes read: the story has shown competing versions, not confirmed Nancy’s accusations (Vanity Fair).
Why does Catherine feel guilty about Jonathan’s death?
Catherine’s account does not make her blameless in every respect. After Nicholas drifted into the sea, Jonathan helped rescue him. Catherine later saw Jonathan struggling in the water and did not act. Jonathan died, and Catherine has carried guilt over her decision. That failure is real, but it does not make Nancy’s claim of a consensual affair—or her accusation that Catherine caused the death through the affair—true (TVLine’s finale recap).

The distinction matters: the finale vindicates Catherine about the assault and the false romance story, while leaving her responsible for the choice she made in the water and the years of silence that followed. Her silence toward Nancy also has a painful motive. Cuarón said Catherine arrived prepared to tell Nancy what Jonathan had done, then decided that revealing her son was a rapist to a dying mother would only cause further pain (Vanity Fair).
Why does Stephen target Catherine and Nicholas?
Stephen’s revenge grows out of grief and his belief that Catherine caused Jonathan’s death. He accepts Nancy’s idealized account of their son and reads the photographs as evidence of an affair. When Catherine tells him what actually happened, the certainty behind his revenge begins to collapse.

At the hospital, Stephen arrives intending to act against Nicholas. He stops when Nicholas reaches for his hand and asks for his mother. Stephen later apologizes to Robert and burns copies of Nancy’s book and family keepsakes. His actions mark a break with the story he had treated as truth, not a way to undo the harm it caused (TVLine; Vanity Fair).
What does the final scene mean?
Catherine and Nicholas embrace. The moment offers the possibility of reconnection after years of secrecy and estrangement; it does not promise that the family is repaired. Cuarón said, “I really believe that the only antidote to unreliable narratives is love,” but cautioned that “Truth is not the final answer” and that the scene is “a moment of a new possibility,” not a happily-ever-after (Vanity Fair).

The ending also leaves consequences in place. Nicholas survives and says he does not remember the childhood incident. Catherine and Robert divorce, and Robert learns that she tried to tell him what happened after Nancy’s book appeared, but he was too angry to listen (TVLine). The embrace is a beginning, not a reset.

The series sets Nancy’s manuscript, the characters’ accounts, and the viewer’s own assumptions against one another. Nancy’s book is not reliable testimony, and suspicion built from it is not the same as evidence. The photographs seem to settle the question only if they are interpreted through the book’s version of events; the finale reveals what they actually record.

That structure makes the twist a correction of the audience’s certainty as well as Stephen’s. Cuarón’s point is not simply that Catherine is innocent: she is telling the truth about the assault, while still carrying guilt about Jonathan and the damage caused by concealing her past from her family. The series’ official page identifies Disclaimer as a seven-chapter psychological thriller written and directed by Cuarón, released October 11, 2024 (Apple TV Press).
