“Downton Abbey 3” is Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, the third feature film in the franchise. It opened in U.S. theaters on September 12, 2025. Set as the Crawleys and their staff enter the 1930s, the film centers on Mary’s public scandal, the family’s financial troubles and the estate’s future.
What is Downton Abbey 3 called?
The released film is titled Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale. Focus Features calls it the third film, and Universal’s home-entertainment announcement describes it as the third and final movie. Producer Gareth Neame told the Associated Press that the intended ending gives fans a sense of how the camera “finally pulls away” and leaves Downton to its future. That is the production’s framing of this story’s conclusion, not proof that no further franchise project could ever be made. Associated Press
What is The Grand Finale about?
The official synopsis places the story in the 1930s, with Mary at the center of a public scandal as the Crawley family faces financial difficulty and the threat of social disgrace. The family must adapt to change while the staff prepares for a new chapter and the next generation takes Downton into the future. The official synopsis offers this broad, spoiler-light setup rather than a scene-by-scene plot account. Focus Features

Who made the film?
Julian Fellowes wrote the screenplay, and Simon Curtis directed. Gareth Neame, Fellowes and Liz Trubridge produced the Carnival Films production, distributed by Focus Features and Universal Pictures International. Fellowes described his ensemble approach this way: “We try to make sure that everyone gets a couple of scenes in which they figure and have their emotional tale.” Curtis praised Fellowes’ character writing, saying, “It is a joy to work on this film because Julian is a master at giving everyone their mini arc.” Focus Features

The story’s focus on change and the next generation gives the film its handoff to Downton’s future. Universal’s home-video description also mentions a royal visit and a silent movie filmed at the estate, but that passage summarizes story elements across the franchise’s final three films; it should not be read as confirming those events for The Grand Finale specifically. The Associated Press reported that the first two feature films together had earned more than $287 million worldwide; that is a combined figure for those two films, not a reported gross for the third.
