It also became the highest-grossing R-rated film worldwide over its theatrical run, a title it held until The Odyssey passed it in 2026. Both claims need their record type and date attached, because the opening-weekend record and the lifetime-gross record are different things and only one of them still belongs to the film.
The opening-weekend record
The Walt Disney Company announced on July 28, 2024 that the film opened to $444.1 million worldwide, including $211 million domestically. Disney described this as the highest-grossing global opening for an R-rated film in box-office history. The film had been released on July 26, 2024, and Marvel Studios named Shawn Levy as director, with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in the leading roles.

Guinness World Records also lists the film’s R-rated global opening-weekend record, but at $445.4 million rather than Disney’s $444.1 million. The two sources do not reconcile the figure in the material available, so each number should be credited to its own source. Guinness notes that its record listings can change and that its online pages may lag behind new results.
The lifetime-gross record and how it changed hands
The opening weekend was only the first milestone. On August 16, 2024, Disney reported that the film had reached $1.086 billion after 23 days in theaters and had become the highest-grossing R-rated film worldwide, passing Joker. That was a dated announcement of a moving total, not a permanent ranking.

The Associated Press reported in 2026 that The Odyssey had overtaken Deadpool & Wolverine as the highest-grossing R-rated movie. AP put The Odyssey’s worldwide total at $1.4 billion at that time. The lifetime-gross crown therefore belongs to The Odyssey, while Deadpool & Wolverine keeps its opening-weekend record listing.

The table separates each record by type and geography and shows the source and date of every figure.

The Guinness and Box Office Mojo lifetime totals differ by a small amount, and the two sources were checked on different dates. Quote whichever source you cite, along with its date, rather than treating the totals as interchangeable.
What Disney and Marvel said at the time
Disney’s July 28, 2024 release quoted Levy on the film’s tone: “I know people are expecting the funny; they’re going to get it. They’re expecting the action; they’re going to get it.” He added that the film “has a warmth as a result of the story we tell between these two guys where this unlikely friendship is built.”

The same release quoted Kevin Feige, identified there as producer and president of Marvel Studios: “Nothing strengthens the Marvel Cinematic Universe or perhaps any cinematic universe like a great movie.” These are studio statements about the film’s strength, not independent evidence of its box-office performance.
Distribution and rating
Box Office Mojo lists the film as R-rated and names Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures as its domestic distributor. Both points are needed to describe the record correctly, since the R-rated category is what separates it from the broader all-ratings records.

Related reading
Marvel published a separate comic, DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE: WWIII, as a trade paperback on October 2, 2024. It was written by Joe Kelly, pencilled by Adam Kubert, and collects issues #1–3. It is an original comic story featuring the same characters, not an adaptation of the film, and it has no bearing on the box-office figures above.
Reading the record correctly
When you describe this film’s achievement, name the record type and the date. “Largest R-rated global opening” refers to opening weekend and is still recognized by Guinness. “Highest-grossing R-rated film” refers to lifetime worldwide gross, which The Odyssey has since surpassed according to AP. Using one phrase for the other misstates what the film holds today.
