Devil in the Family: The Fall of Ruby Franke is a 2025 Hulu crime documentary series about the Ruby Franke case and the family-vlogging channel 8 Passengers. It features accounts from Franke family members and draws on previously unseen channel footage; it is a documentary, not a substitute for court records.
What is Devil in the Family about?
The series examines the Ruby Franke case alongside the family’s public life on 8 Passengers, the YouTube channel that documented the Frankes. Hulu’s catalog identifies it as a 2025 crime documentary TV series. The subject involves child abuse; Apple TV flags disturbing mature themes, so it may not be suitable for every viewer.
Who appears, and what footage does the series use?
Disney+’s official listing describes on-camera accounts from Shari and Chad Franke, Ruby and Kevin Franke’s two eldest children, and Kevin Franke, Ruby’s husband. It also describes access to family members, friends, and neighbors, along with more than 1,000 hours of unseen footage from the family’s YouTube channel. That footage provides material for the documentary’s account; it does not make every allegation or interpretation presented in the series an independently established court finding.
How did 8 Passengers fit into the story?
8 Passengers was the family-vlogging channel at the center of the Frankes’ online public life. Hulu’s official trailer says it had 2.5 million subscribers at its peak. A 2025 U.S. congressional hearing record reports 2.5 million subscribers and more than 1 billion total views at the channel’s height, attributing both figures to the Hulu docuseries. These are attributed figures, not independently audited channel metrics.

The case also sits within wider debate about children featured in online content. The Associated Press reported that Utah enacted protections requiring creators who earn more than $150,000 annually from content featuring children to set aside 15% of those earnings in a trust children can access at 18. That is AP’s description of the measure, not legal advice; the report alone does not establish how the law applies in a particular situation.

In a statement to lawmakers quoted by AP, Eve Franke, identified as the youngest Franke child, said: “I’m not saying YouTube is a bad thing. Sometimes it brings us together. But kids deserve to be loved, not used by the ones that are supposed to love them the most.”
