Bugonia is worth watching if you want a dark, conspiracy-driven comedy-thriller built around an escalating kidnapping, and if Yorgos Lanthimos’s cool, provocative tone appeals to you. It is a less certain choice if you want a conventional thriller or a livelier, more maximalist version of its source material. This review tests the praise in the title by looking at the premise, the central pairing of Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, the director’s framing, and how the film sits beside the 2003 South Korean film it is based on. It does not describe a scene-by-scene viewing; it assesses the film from its official materials, its cast and credits, and published critical reading.
What Bugonia is about
Focus Features’ official synopsis describes two conspiracy-obsessed men who kidnap a high-powered CEO because they believe she is an alien intent on destroying Earth. The premise is a single, closed situation: a captive, two captors, and a story whose stakes rest on what each person believes is true. That narrowness is the film’s organizing idea, and most of the praise and criticism below follows from it.

At the Venice Film Festival, where the film premiered in 2025, Lanthimos tied the premise to the present. In an Associated Press report from August 28, 2025, he said: “Not much of the dystopia in this film is very fictional. A lot of it is very reflective of the real world.” That is the director’s own framing of the film’s contemporary conspiracy angle, not an established fact about real-world events, and it is worth keeping in mind when judging how sharply the satire lands.
Is Bugonia a remake?
The title calls it a remake. Focus Features’ official page and announcement describe the project as based on Save the Green Planet!, the 2003 South Korean film. In practice the film is an adaptation that keeps the core situation and reshapes the tone, so “remake” is accurate in the everyday sense but loose in the technical one.

Who stars in Bugonia
The Venice Biennale’s official 2025 film listing gives the following cast:
- Emma Stone, who plays the high-powered CEO at the center of the kidnapping plot
- Jesse Plemons, cast opposite Stone as one of the conspiracy-minded captors
- Aidan Delbis, Stavros Halkias and Alicia Silverstone, also listed in the main cast
The director is Yorgos Lanthimos, whose name appears in the film’s billing alongside the cast.
Three presences in one escalating situation
The title’s phrase, “a trifecta of wild freaks,” is a critical opinion, and it makes three claims at once: that Stone, Plemons and Lanthimos each bring something distinctive, and that the three work together. The premise makes the second claim the important one, because a two-hander in confined circumstances succeeds or fails on how its performers and its director handle the escalation.
Emma Stone
Stone’s role as the captured executive puts her at the emotional and narrative center of the story. A character whom the captors believe is an alien is a role in which every reaction can be read two ways, as genuine fear or as calculated performance. That ambiguity is the kind of material that rewards a performer who can hold both readings at once. Whether Stone’s work achieves that is the central question a viewer must answer, and the casting and billing alone do not settle it.

Jesse Plemons
Plemons is paired with Stone in the kidnapping plot, and the film depends on the captor’s conviction feeling real rather than comic. The premise invites broad caricature of conspiracy thinking; the praise in the title implies that Plemons resists that. As with Stone, the test is in the scenes themselves, and readers should judge whether the escalation between them feels earned.
Yorgos Lanthimos
Lanthimos supplies the framing that holds the two performers together. His stated view, quoted above, is that the film’s dystopia reflects the real world. The director’s distinctive control of tone is what the title most clearly praises, and it is also the element most likely to divide audiences, because a precise, detached style can read as either rigorous or withholding.
Where the praise holds and where it strains
The strongest case for the film is structural. A closed situation with two performers, a contemporary conspiracy theme, and a director who has already shown a taste for unusual premises gives the material a clear identity. The premise is easy to describe and difficult to shake, which is often what makes a dark comedy memorable.
The weakest point is energy. The Atlantic’s October 31, 2025 review described Bugonia as muted and chamber-like, in contrast to the knotty twists and maximalist visual flair of the original. That is one critic’s reading, not a consensus, but it names the trade-off directly: the restraint that gives the new version its discipline may also cost it the playful excess that made the source distinctive. A viewer who wants surprise and visual abundance may find the film quieter than expected.

Compared with Save the Green Planet!
The comparison below uses only the points that the available reporting establishes. Where a comparison is not stated in the sources, the cell says so.
| Element | Save the Green Planet! (2003, South Korean) | Bugonia (2025, Lanthimos) |
|---|---|---|
| Core premise | Not stated in the sources consulted for this review | Two conspiracy-obsessed men kidnap a CEO they believe is an alien (Focus Features synopsis) |
| Storytelling | Knotty twists (The Atlantic, October 31, 2025) | Muted and chamber-like (The Atlantic, October 31, 2025) |
| Visual style | Maximalist visual flair (The Atlantic, October 31, 2025) | Restrained; the Atlantic’s review describes it as chamber-like rather than maximalist |
| Relationship | Source film | Based on the source film (Focus Features) |
For readers, this means the adaptation is best approached as a different film built on the same idea rather than a faithful retelling with extra polish. If the original’s twists and visual excess are what drew you in, Bugonia is likely to feel like a deliberate reduction. If you want the premise with a more controlled, withholding tone, the new film offers that.

Focus Features’ release announcements give the following US dates. These are distributor-announced dates, not universal release dates, and they are historical as of the 2025 theatrical run:
- US limited engagement from October 24, 2025
- Wide expansion announced for October 31, 2025
- A separate official announcement gives November 7, 2025 as the wide US date
The two wide-release dates conflict in the announcements, so treat the November 7 date as the later official word on the wide expansion and check your local listings for other markets.

Owning the film on home media
Universal Pictures at Home’s press release lists a December 23, 2025 street date for the home-media edition. Formats, bundles and retailer availability change after launch, and this review does not confirm the current listing for any format or retailer. Before buying, check the format (such as Blu-ray or digital) and the retailer’s stock for the edition you want. Save the Green Planet! is worth seeking out if the comparison interests you, but its current physical or streaming availability was not established here, so verify it separately.
Who should watch it
- Watch it if you like dark comedy with a clear conspiracy premise, a tightly confined story, and a director whose style is precise and detached.
- Approach with caution if you want the original’s twists and visual abundance, or if you expect a conventional thriller pace.
- Skip it if the premise of a kidnapping built on alien paranoia does not appeal, because the film commits to that idea rather than softening it.
The title’s praise is most convincing on the premise and the director’s control of tone. Whether the performances deliver the “wild” energy it promises is for each viewer to judge in the theater or at home.
