Full spoilers for Black Phone 2 follow. The film gives Finn and Gwen a supernatural victory over the Grabber and emotional closure about their mother, while leaving the door open to another story. That opening is not a confirmation of Black Phone 3: director Scott Derrickson said he had not planned a third installment, and actor Mason Thames’s later interest was conditional.
How does Black Phone 2 end?
Set in 1982, four years after the first film, the sequel follows Finn and his psychic sister Gwen to Alpine Lake winter camp. Gwen’s visions point them toward three boys connected to the Grabber. Their investigation reveals that the victims’ bodies were hidden beneath the frozen lake.
The story also changes what Finn and Gwen know about their mother. She did not die by suicide: after using her own psychic ability to uncover the Grabber’s crimes, she was murdered by him, and her death was staged.
As the siblings and their allies recover the boys’ bodies, Gwen confronts the Grabber in the dream realm. The boys’ spirits help her defeat him and send him back to the abyss. In the aftermath, Gwen receives a call from her mother on a dead phone. Her mother tells her she is at peace and encourages Gwen to see her psychic ability as a blessing. The immediate threat is defeated, and Gwen gains a measure of closure.

How is the Grabber back?
The sequel does not reverse the Grabber’s physical death in the first film. He returns as a supernatural presence who attacks Gwen through dreams. His power is tied to the boys he killed and concealed at the camp; recovering their bodies and laying them to rest helps break that hold.
Peacock’s January 2026 explainer compares the dream-based threat to Freddy Krueger and discusses the sequel’s slasher influences. That is a comparison of horror storytelling, not a connection to the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. Peacock’s explanation of the ending describes the return mechanism.
Is the Grabber gone for good?
The ending treats the Grabber’s immediate supernatural threat as defeated: the boys’ spirits help send him back to the abyss after their bodies are recovered. It does not establish a rule that he could never return in another story. The film resolves this confrontation, but its supernatural premise leaves room for further fiction.
What does the ending mean for a possible third film?
Derrickson described the supernatural mythology as a way to expand the story, not to explain the Grabber’s evil. In an October 17, 2025 interview with TheWrap, he said, “I went that direction specifically because it was a way to bring some more mythology into the storytelling. But it’s not an explanation for The Grabber’s evil.”

On a possible third film, Derrickson said, “I honestly haven’t thought about it. I have not gone down that road in my mind yet. And that’s on purpose.” He called Black Phone 2 “my own completion to the first movie” and said another installment would require him to “start from square one.”
| Possibility | What the available statements establish |
|---|---|
| No further film | Derrickson said he had not planned another installment and regarded the sequel as his completion to the original story. TheWrap, October 17, 2025 |
| A further film | Mason Thames said on December 6, 2025, that he could imagine returning if Derrickson had another story worth telling: “So if he has another one and if he thinks there’s a story to be told and some way to continue, then, yeah, I think maybe.” This is conditional interest, not a production announcement. The evidence supports describing a third film as possible, not confirmed. Neither an open ending nor an actor’s willingness to return establishes that a studio has greenlit a sequel.
