Asan Bibir Panchali is a Bengali devotional narrative about a brother who refuses to let his infant sister be killed under their father’s law. In historian Projit Bihari Mukharji’s account, the tale ends with the king’s repentance and a ban on female infanticide. Its medieval setting belongs to the story; it should not be mistaken for independently verified history.
What is Asan Bibir Panchali?
Asan Bibir Panchali is a Bengali bratakatha: a narrative associated with a brata, or vow and observance. Mukharji describes the observance as involving minor rituals and repeated recitation of the tale. He encountered a short printed verse booklet titled Mushkil Asan Bratakatha ba Asan Bibir Panchali, which he said had fewer than twenty printed pages. The title joins the names Mushkil Asan and Asan Bibi.
The story’s devotional form is Bengali, while its characters and religious imagery include Islamic names and figures. Mukharji describes the Bibis as a liminal feature of Bengali religion and notes opposition to them from scripturalist Muslim and Hindu constituencies; that is his characterization, not a universal position shared by either religious community. What happens in the story?
Isa Khan’s law and Shireen’s birth
In Mukharji’s summary, Isa Khan rules a kingdom troubled by raids and abductions attributed in the story to Arakanese pirates. He leaves while his wife is pregnant and orders that any daughter born during his absence be killed. His daughter Shireen is born while he is away, and his eldest son, Chand Khan, has been left in charge.

Chand protects his sister
Chand refuses to let the nobles carry out the order. When Isa returns and initially seeks to enforce his law, Chand argues that if anyone must be punished, it should be him. Isa is caught between paternal feeling and his duty as ruler, and exiles both children rather than resolving the conflict at once.
Asan Bibi’s intercession and the ending
In exile, Chand works as a mercenary and dies. Shireen prays to Asan Bibi, whose intercession brings about Chand’s revival. Isa later repents and invites the siblings home. Chand makes their return conditional on first prohibiting female infanticide. Isa repeals the law, bans the practice in the kingdom, and welcomes them back.

Why does Chand’s refusal matter?
The central conflict is not simply a contest between a rebellious son and a tyrannical father. Mukharji emphasizes that Chand’s opposition to the killing coexists with his filial devotion: he challenges his father’s law but does not cease to be his son. His willingness to accept punishment, followed by his condition for returning from exile, makes protection of Shireen the story’s moral test of kingship.
The resolution is explicit: the ruler repents, the law is abolished, and the siblings return. The narrative therefore opposes female infanticide through family loyalty, moral argument, and devotional intervention rather than through a historical account of how a real law was changed.

Is the story a historical record?
No evidence in Mukharji’s account establishes Isa Khan’s law, the events involving Chand and Shireen, or the tale’s pirate raids as verified historical events. They are elements of the narrative’s medieval framing. The story should not be used to claim that Arakanese raids historically caused female infanticide or that this episode documents a real royal ban.
A 2025 article by Mukharji places Bengali bratakathas in a wider discussion of historical memory and changing ideals of femininity. It notes that scholars have treated these narratives both as possible portals to women’s pasts and as instruments of patriarchal socialization, and examines how ideals shift over time. Are there multiple versions?
The printed booklet Mukharji encountered should not be treated as identical to every locally performed song. He contrasts the booklet, whose authorship was attributed to a Brahmin pandit, with Debabrata Naskar’s collection of devotional songs in southern West Bengal in the 1990s. Mukharji reports that Naskar found one song praising Asan Bibi, sometimes performed with slight modifications as an Ola Bibi song. In that account, other Bibi figures had multiple popular narratives.
Mukharji also reports that the collected songs were performed by lower-caste singers, often at shrines served by lower-caste, usually Bagdi, priests. This is field context from the accounts he discusses, not a census of performers, shrines, or present-day practice. The available evidence supports selected contrasts, not an exhaustive catalogue of versions.
