The short answer: the boxed “vampire killing kits” that turn up in auction catalogues and museum displays are real objects, but the evidence does not show them to be Victorian travel gear. The best-supported reading is that many were assembled later, probably after Bram Stoker’s Dracula was published in 1897. The Royal Armouries goes further and argues that kits of this kind could not have existed before the Hammer horror films of the 1950s to 1970s. Nothing reviewed establishes them as standard equipment for hunters or travelers.
Two kits, two different stories
Two well-documented examples anchor most discussion of these objects. One was offered at Sotheby’s and described in a 2004 catalogue. The other is held by the Royal Armouries, the UK national collection of arms and armour, which acquired its kit in 2012. Both are cased sets of items associated with vampire lore, but the institutions describe them very differently.
| Attribute | Sotheby’s kit (2004 catalogue) | Royal Armouries kit (acquired 2012) |
|---|---|---|
| Container | Walnut box with brass lock and red plush lining | Not stated in the museum’s description |
| Date given | “Circa 1900” as the auction dating for that lot | Acquired 2012; the museum argues kits of this type could not have existed until the 1950s to 1970s |
| Origin view | Origin debated; assembly after 1897 described as more likely | Inspired by movies, not by Victorian stories or folklore (museum interpretation) |
| Named makers | “Professor Ernst Blomberg” and Liège gunmaker “Nicholas Plomdeur” cannot be confirmed | Not stated |
| Label claim | Says the items protect travelers in Eastern Europe | Not stated as a protective claim; the object is treated as material culture |
| Whether used against vampires | Left open by the catalogue | Not claimed; the museum treats the kit as an interpretation of belief and fiction |
Note that these two claims concern two different objects. The Sotheby’s “circa 1900” is the auction house’s dating for that lot. The Royal Armouries’ conclusion is its own interpretation of its object. Neither settles the question for kits in general.
What is actually inside a kit
Kits are not standardized. The two examples overlap on a few items and diverge on others, which is itself a reason to be cautious about any single “correct” set of contents.

The Royal Armouries’ label also carries a handwritten scriptural passage, which reads: “But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them bring hither, and slay them before me.” The Sotheby’s wording quoted here is the label text as the catalogue transcribes it. Both are descriptions of what the labels say. Neither proves who packed the box or whether anything in it was used as described.
Why “circa 1900” does not settle the date
A kit can be made of parts that are older than the kit itself, and the date of the parts is a different question from the date the parts were combined. Three separate dates need to be kept apart.

The age of individual components
A pistol, a crucifix, or a bottle can have its own manufacturing date. Those dates tell you when the part was made, not when it was packed with the others. The Sotheby’s catalogue allows that old components may have been gathered into a later assemblage. Dating an individual item does not date the set.
The date of assembly
This is the question that matters for the vampire story. The Sotheby’s catalogue regards assembly after the 1897 publication of Dracula as more likely than an earlier date. The Royal Armouries goes further for its own object and dates the idea of such a kit to the screen era. Both views place the combining of the items later than the vampire myth itself, though they differ on how much later.

The date of sale and the label
A lid label is evidence of what the maker or seller wanted buyers to believe. The Sotheby’s box is labeled a “Vampire Killing Kit” and claims the items protect travelers in Eastern Europe. That label is part of the object’s history, but it is not independent proof of the claim. The catalogue also notes that the named maker and gunmaker cannot be confirmed, so the most specific details on the label are the least verified.
What folklore actually involved
The Royal Armouries’ account of historical responses to suspected vampires describes staking, heart removal, burning, decapitation, and dismemberment. It notes that a specialist weapon was rarely used. The tools it describes are ordinary: iron implements and a gravedigger’s spade. Those practices do not, on this account, point to a standard fitted case being carried by hunters.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
This distinction is the core of the argument. A folk practice that used whatever iron or wood was at hand is a different thing from a purpose-built, labeled set of items. The fitted kit is a modern form of an older idea, not evidence of the older practice itself.

Silver bullets are the clearest example of a later image being projected backward. The Royal Armouries says there was no association between silver shot and vampires until 1928. Earlier silver-shot associations exist, but they concern other supernatural creatures, such as werewolves. Treating silver bullets as a timeless vampire remedy misreads the record. The 1928 date is the museum’s own, and it is best cited as its finding rather than as a universal fact.

Dracula and the screen image
Dracula appeared in 1897, and the Sotheby’s catalogue links the likely assembly of kits to that publication. The Royal Armouries places the kit’s inspiration in the Hammer horror films of the 1950s to 1970s. Between them, these two points give better-supported contexts for how kits look and why they were presented as they are than any account of routine Victorian hunting equipment.
The Royal Armouries’ conclusion is attributed to its survey of vampire slaying in folklore and fiction, carried out by Keeper of Firearms and Artillery Jonathan Ferguson. The museum presents that conclusion as its institutional view. It does not supply a direct quotation from Ferguson, and none should be attributed to him.
How to evaluate a vampire hunting kit claim
When you see a kit in a sale listing, a museum case, or a documentary, work through these questions in order. They separate the object from the story told about it.
- Identify the object and the institution describing it. A sale lot, a museum record, and a reenactment prop make different kinds of claims.
- Find each date. Ask for the date of the components, the date of assembly, and the date of the sale. Do not accept one date as covering all three.
- Check named makers and owners. If a catalogue says a named maker cannot be confirmed, treat the name as an attribution, not a fact.
- Read every label as a claim. A label records what someone wanted a buyer to believe, including protective or historical claims.
- Ask whether the function is documented or inferred. Documented use needs a period source describing the practice. A kit that matches a film or novel is evidence of later imagery, not of folk practice.
Why these objects still matter
A kit that was assembled later is not thereby worthless. The Royal Armouries regards its kit as material culture that shows how people have related to imaginary creatures. The same is true of the Sotheby’s box: its label, contents, and presentation record what buyers and sellers imagined vampires to require. The object tells you about the modern imagination, even where it tells you little about medieval or Victorian practice.
