Chetan Bhagat’s 400 Days is a missing-child mystery braided with a romance. Scroll.in critic Sahana Hegde’s headline, published on 13 November 2021, makes two claims at once: the novel leans on familiar, clichéd ingredients, and it is, in her judgment, the most readable novel Bhagat has written so far. The second claim is one reviewer’s opinion, not a consensus finding. The book is fiction, not a documentary, and nothing in the material behind this article links it to a film or documentary adaptation.
What the novel is about
The story opens with Alia telling Keshav Rajpurohit that her daughter Siya was kidnapped nine months earlier. The police have described the case as cold, and the family has stopped searching. Alia keeps going and asks Keshav to help. Keshav narrates the book himself, and he describes himself as a disappointment to his family, who press him to marry, prepare for IPS exams, meet people, or close his detective agency.
The publisher’s copy describes the book as a combination of mystery and romance, with suspense, friendship, love and a mother’s determination. That is promotional framing, so the more useful check is what the strands actually do on the page. Four run through the book:
- The missing-child investigation, which drives the plot and gives Alia’s search its urgency.
- Keshav’s family pressure and career, which sets up his reluctance to take the case.
- The romance, which the author describes as morally complicated rather than simply sweet.
- Side plotlines, including a side character’s fitness journey, which the review excerpt names among the other threads.

What the review argues
Hegde’s headline has two parts that pull in opposite directions. The first is a criticism: the ingredients are clichéd. The second is a judgment: the book is the most readable Bhagat novel to date. Both are her view. This article can confirm the headline’s two claims, but it cannot reproduce the full text of the review, so the specific clichés she identifies are not restated here. Readers who want her reasoning should read the piece on Scroll.in directly.
What Bhagat says he was aiming for
In an interview with The Telegraph India published on 3 November 2021, Bhagat said he wrote the novel during the lockdown, when schools had closed. He said he was worried that adults were not aware of how much children were exposed to online strangers. He described wanting a story that was more than a thriller, one that combined a missing-child plot with a morally complicated love story. He also said mystery adds grip, but that friendship, romance and humour are what readers keep returning to in his work.

On accessibility, he said:
“Making my books accessible has been a very big goal for me. People are finding it hard to read because they are getting distracted by so many things available these days.”

Does the mix work?
Three questions help separate the author’s aims from the reviewer’s verdict.
Rank #3
- Type : Bhagwat Geeta Book
- Pack Of : 1
- Color : Muticolor
- Balance. Does the missing-child mystery carry the book, or does the romance take over? The catalog lists crime and thriller/suspense alongside romance and friendship, which suggests both are meant to be central. Whether the balance tilts is a judgment for each reader.
- Familiarity versus readability. Hegde’s headline puts these in tension. A story can lean on stock relationships and still be easy to read, and the review argues that 400 Days does exactly that. Whether the trade-off suits you depends on how much you value fresh material over momentum.
- The stated aim. Bhagat wanted a layered story rather than a plain thriller. The review’s readability verdict is partial evidence on that point, because it speaks to pace and ease rather than depth of characterisation.
The sales claim and its limits
An author biography reproduced by Google Books in 2021 says Bhagat has sold “over twelve million copies” and been translated into “over twenty languages.” The same biography describes ten novels at that point. These figures are publisher-supplied and have not been independently audited. They are dated, so they are not a current total, and they do not establish sales of 400 Days specifically.
