The novel follows an estate manager in Bihar who grows attached to the forest around him. This is a new English translation—not the novel’s first: an earlier version by Rimli Bhattacharya was cataloged by Seagull Books in 2002.
What is Aranyak about?
Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay wrote Aranyak in 1939, drawing on his years in northern Bihar, according to Penguin India. Penguin renders the title as “Of the Forest.” Its story follows a man who takes a job managing an estate in Bihar and gradually falls in love with the forest around him.
The publisher frames the novel through the contrast between urban and rural life and the relationship between people and nature. That gives readers a way into the book’s central setting and concerns without reducing it to a simple nature story: the forest is also the place where the protagonist lives and works.
Is the Penguin edition the first English translation?
No. The Penguin Modern Classics edition is a new translation by Bhaskar Chattopadhyay, but catalog search results identify an earlier English edition, Aranyak: Of the Forest, translated by Rimli Bhattacharya and cataloged as a 2002 Seagull Books publication. The catalog record could not be directly checked, so its edition details should be treated cautiously. The evidence establishes no basis for ranking the two translations or claiming that one is more faithful or readable.

Should you read it in English or Bengali?
If Bengali is not a language you read with confidence, the Penguin translation is a practical way to read the novel rather than relying on a version you cannot comfortably follow. A translation necessarily presents the work in another language, but the available publisher and catalog information does not support a detailed comparison of either English version’s style or fidelity. If you can read Bengali and want the original, choose the Bengali text; if not, Chattopadhyay’s edition is a clearly identified, current English-language option.
Which edition should an English-language reader choose?
The Penguin paperback is the straightforward choice if you want a current, readily identifiable edition. Penguin lists it at 350 pages, with ISBN 9780143426011, and names booksellers including Amazon, Bookswagon, Crossword, Atlantic, Bookscape and SapnaOnline. Its listed MRP is ₹499; price and stock depend on retailer and may change, so check the seller’s current listing. If you come across the Seagull edition, its existence is a reason not to describe the Penguin book as the first English version. The available catalog details do not establish whether the editions differ in translation approach, notes or other contents, so choose based on access and edition preference rather than an unsupported quality claim.
