Amrut’s single malt began as an ambitious extension of a Bengaluru spirits business founded in 1948. The company moved into malt distillation in the 1980s, developed its whisky with overseas audiences in mind, and launched it in Glasgow in 2004. Its story is not proof of a particular market share; it is an account of a pioneering launch, a distinctive Indian production setting, and recognition that helped introduce the whisky to an international audience.
From Amrut Laboratories to malt whisky
Amrut Distilleries traces its beginnings to 1948, when founder J.N. Radhakrishna established Amrut Laboratories, according to the company’s official history. The business did not begin as a single-malt specialist. Its later move into malt distillation, which the company timeline places in the 1980s, marked a change in direction.
The same history identifies a malt feasibility study in 2002. That groundwork preceded the Glasgow launch two years later, though the company’s own launch material described the development effort as “20 years of research.” That phrase is Amrut’s characterization of the project, rather than an independently verified duration.
Why launch in Glasgow?
Amrut introduced its single malt at Cafe India in Glasgow, Scotland, in 2004, according to the distillery’s timeline and its contemporaneous launch material. The choice placed an Indian whisky before audiences in a country with an established whisky culture. The launch was a pivotal step in the brand’s international story, but it does not by itself establish sales scale or market share.

The company’s August 2004 launch document said select malted barley grown in Punjab and Rajasthan was malted in Jaipur and Delhi, then transported to Bangalore for mashing and small-batch distillation. It described the whisky as the result of 20 years of research. These are statements from the company’s launch material, not independent verification of every detail of current production.
Indian barley and Bangalore maturation
The launch document made the journey from northern Indian barley-growing regions to Bangalore central to the whisky’s identity. It said the spirit matured for more than three years in imported oak barrels in Bangalore’s tropical conditions. The company described the resulting evaporation as the “Angel’s share.” These details help explain how Amrut presented the whisky as Indian in origin and character while using imported oak for maturation.

Amrut’s production page outlines the general stages of preparation, mashing, fermentation, distillation, maturation, and bottling. That overview is not, on its own, a batch-by-batch account of how each current expression is made.
The 2004 launch material described the whisky’s notes as “fruity and chocolate laced with spices.” This is the producer’s tasting description, issued by Fiona Laing on behalf of Amrut Distilleries Ltd. and The Premier Scotch Whisky Co. Ltd., rather than an independent tasting assessment.

Recognition that brought Amrut Fusion attention
Amrut’s product page reports that Jim Murray’s 2010 assessment gave Amrut Fusion 97.5 points and ranked it third globally. The score and ranking belong to that specific assessment, as reported by the producer; they should not be read as a timeless or universal consensus. Fusion’s release year was 2009, according to the distillery timeline, while the cited recognition was in 2010.
The same product page lists later competition results, including a 2020 PR%F Awards Double Gold with 98 points. Those are producer-reported awards tied to their stated years and awarding bodies, not a single continuous ranking of all whiskies.

What Amrut’s rise does—and does not—show
Amrut’s history offers a clear arc: a company with roots in 1948 entered malt distillation decades later, developed a whisky around Indian barley and Bangalore maturation, and chose Glasgow for its 2004 single-malt launch. Fusion’s reported 2010 score and ranking, alongside later company-listed awards, provide named markers of recognition.
Those milestones support describing Amrut as an Indian single-malt pioneer with international visibility. They do not establish current market share, present-day sales, or universal availability. The company’s story is strongest when told through what the sources document: its founding, its production ambitions, its launch, and specific recognition at particular dates.
