What Mani Ratnam said about Thug Life
During Mumbai promotions, Ratnam framed the film’s crime setting as a backdrop for a personal drama. “Thug Life is actually an emotional drama within the world of crime,” he told Scroll in an interview published May 21, 2025. Haasan, who co-wrote the screenplay with Ratnam, made a similar distinction: “The film isn’t all about action, there is a lot of emotion too.” Read the Scroll interview.

Ratnam also said, “The scale of the film has been designed according to the demands of the story.” His description points to a film whose intended emphasis is not simply gangster spectacle, but the emotional consequences of a relationship formed inside that world.
Who are Sakthivel and Amaran?
Haasan plays Rangaraaya Sakthivel, a gangster who adopts Amaran, an orphan played by Silambarasan TR. The trailer, as described in Scroll’s interview report, sets up Amaran turning against the man who raised him. Nandini Ramnath’s review for Scroll likewise identifies the relationship between the gangster and his adopted son, now a rival, as the film’s central story.

This father-and-son conflict gives Ratnam’s phrase a concrete meaning: the crime world supplies the circumstances, while loyalty, family, and betrayal drive the central drama. The sources establish that premise, but do not support treating every character’s role or the full plot as settled from the promotional account alone.
A reunion after Nayakan
Thug Life reunites Ratnam and Haasan, whose earlier collaboration was Nayakan (1987). The pair worked together on the screenplay as well as bringing their established director–actor partnership to the new film.
The reported principal creative credits include AR Rahman as composer, Ravi K Chandran as cinematographer, and Sreekar Prasad as editor. The co-producers named in the interview are Raaj Kamal Films International, Madras Talkies, and Red Giant Movies. The reported cast also includes Nasser, Joju George, Mahesh Manjrekar, Abhirami, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Trisha Krishnan, Ashok Selvan, and Sanya Malhotra.
What one review says about the film
In a review published on June 5, 2025, Ramnath reported a runtime of 165 minutes. She praised elements of the staging and performances, while finding the story thin, the pacing uneven, and the treatment of characters crowded. Those are one critic’s assessments, not a measure of wider audience or critical consensus. Read the Scroll review.
