An American Girl in India: Letters and Recollections, 1963–64 brings together the letters she sent her parents during that first visit with annotations and reflections she added decades later. It is both a record of a young scholar encountering India and an account of how her understanding changed over time.
What is An American Girl in India about?
The book follows Doniger’s first visit to India through letters to her parents, then revisits those letters with commentary informed by the years that followed. Much of her year was spent in Shantiniketan, with the account also touching on Calcutta, travel, study and encounters elsewhere in the country. It moves between language learning, religious practice and the arts, and the practical details of daily life, cultural difference and homesickness.
Doniger describes the book as “an annotated edition of the letters that I wrote home to my parents on my first visit to India, in 1963–1964,” in a 2025 reflection for The New York Review of Books. The title’s “recollections” are not a separate travel narrative: the later voice sits alongside the younger writer’s account, giving readers a way to see both what she noticed then and what she later reconsidered.
Why did Doniger go, and where did she stay?
Doniger arrived in Calcutta in August 1963, aged 22, on a scholarship to study Sanskrit and Bengali. Much of her stay was in Tagore’s Shantiniketan. Her letters reflect a scholar learning languages and encountering Indian scripture, dance, temple architecture and ritual, as well as friendships, travel and everyday surprises.

A letter dated September 15, 1963, from Shantiniketan offers one small, seasonal scene: Doniger writes of autumn arriving with the local kash flowers. The Speaking Tiger excerpt gives the dated passage in context.
How do the annotations change the letters?
Doniger says she kept passages that now seemed politically naive or embarrassing rather than editing them out, and added comments shaped by the intervening decades. That choice makes the distance between the letter-writer and the later annotator part of the reading experience. A first impression remains visible, but it is not presented as the final word.

The result is especially useful for readers interested in how travel writing ages. The letters preserve the immediacy of a young visitor’s reactions; the annotations let Doniger acknowledge limits in those reactions and reflect on what she could not yet understand. The book’s interest lies partly in that conversation across time.
What does the book observe about India in 1963–64?
Doniger’s subject matter ranges from language and religious life to travel, social encounters and daily routines. Her observations also sit against the political atmosphere of the early 1960s, with attention to events in India and the United States. The texture is not a comprehensive survey: it is a personal account shaped by where she went, what she studied and whom she met.

A 2022 Scroll review frames the book as an outsider’s account while emphasizing its close observation and retrospective perspective. It also notes Doniger’s awareness that being American and white opened academic and social doors. That vantage point matters: the letters register a particular visitor’s access and assumptions, not a neutral or representative account of the country.
The same review quotes Doniger’s remark about uncertain local spellings around Bolpur: “life is very approximate here”. Read in context, the line belongs to a young traveler trying to make sense of unfamiliar details; it should not be turned into a timeless generalization about India.

In a 2022 interview with Hindustan Times, Doniger recalled that illness led her to leave after eight months. She also described geopolitical tensions in 1964 as affecting travel plans. These are her retrospective details about the trip, rather than a broad account of travel conditions for everyone at the time.
