Krishand’s story follows a small-time gang whose schemes grow into a layered saga of rivalries and relationships; its lively character work and comic-book flourishes are engaging, though its leisurely pace and dense, deliberately messy storytelling can test patience.
What is 4.5 Gang about?
Written and directed by Krishand, the series is set in fictional Thiruvanchipuram, modelled on Thiruvananthapuram. Its central group is four men and their friend with dwarfism, whose place in the gang is reflected in the “.5” name. They begin with modest ways to make money, from pilfering milk to entering the flower-supply business, but their ambitions bring them into conflict with local racketeers, corrupt police, rivals and the complications of personal relationships.

The story is not told as a simple, forward-moving crime plot. It shifts between the present and earlier events, while Maithreyan, a writer, recounts Arikuttan’s life. His embellishments make the act of telling part of the show’s design, adding another layer between the gang’s history and the audience.
How does the series balance crime and comedy?
This is not a straight-faced gangster drama. The show mixes crime-saga stakes with salty humour, swagger, songs and comic-book energy. Split screens and other stylistic flourishes give it a knowingly heightened feel; the presentation is as interested in personality and performance as in the mechanics of each scheme.

That approach suits viewers who enjoy genre play and an ensemble of vivid, imperfect characters. Those looking for a brisk, realistic crime thriller or a cleanly linear narrative may find the shifts and tonal looseness less satisfying.
What works best in the review?
In her August 29, 2025 review for Scroll.in, Nandini Ramnath’s strongest praise is for the characters and the cast bringing them to life. She particularly highlights Sanju Sivram as Arikuttan and Jagadish as Maithreyan. Their performances help make the gang’s small schemes, shifting loyalties and larger-than-life retelling worth following.

The same review identifies the main trade-off: the writing can be dense, the pacing leisurely, and scenes sometimes linger past their most effective point. The series’ self-conscious messiness is part of its personality, but also a source of drag. Ramnath describes the result as an underdog saga that becomes a “shaggy dog tale”—a useful shorthand for both its memorable character work and its tendency to sprawl.
