The FIR also names India Today Group chairman Aroon Purie and Living Media India Limited. The allegations have not been established as fact, and the TV Today Network denied that the broadcast contained derogatory remarks.
Why was Anjana Om Kashyap booked?
In this context, “booked” means named in a police First Information Report (FIR); it does not mean that a court found anyone guilty. Ludhiana Police registered FIR No. 90 on October 9, 2025, following a complaint by Chaudhary Yashpal, national coordinator of Bharatiya Valmiki Dharam Samaj (BHAVADHAS). The complaint alleged that remarks about Maharishi Valmiki in an Aaj Tak debate, reportedly shared through the channel’s official social-media accounts, were derogatory and hurt the community’s sentiments. The full broadcast and full FIR text were not available in the reports cited here, so the disputed remarks should not be treated as verified verbatim dialogue. The Indian Express reported the FIR and complaint.
Who was named, and what laws were cited?
The FIR names Kashyap, Aroon Purie and Living Media India Limited. News reports identify the provisions cited as Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Section 3(1)(v) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Hindustan Times reported those provisions. Ludhiana Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma told The Indian Express that “The case has been registered after taking legal opinion.”
What did Aaj Tak’s network say?
TV Today Network Limited denied the allegation. In a statement reported by The Indian Express, it said: “TV Today Network Limited strongly denies the allegations contained in the FIR registered in Ludhiana regarding purported derogatory remarks about Bhagwan Maharishi Valmiki Ji.” The network described the program as respectful and balanced, said the full footage contained no derogatory reference, and argued that selectively edited clips misrepresented the broadcast. Those are the network’s defense and account of the footage, not independent findings about the disputed remarks. The Indian Express report includes the network’s response.

What happened in the High Court?
On October 19, 2025, the Punjab and Haryana High Court stayed further proceedings in the FIR while considering three connected petitions brought by Purie, Kashyap and Living Media India seeking to quash it. The report said the court issued notice of motion for December 15, 2025. That October report describes an interim stay, not a final ruling; the scheduled date alone does not establish that a hearing took place or that the court later decided the petitions. The Indian Express reported the interim order.
Was the separate video-removal case the same case?
No. A separate public-interest litigation sought removal of the video and a public apology. The Punjab and Haryana High Court dismissed that PIL as withdrawn on January 19, 2026, after questioning its premise. That procedural outcome concerned the PIL, not the petitions seeking to quash FIR No. 90; it does not establish how those petitions were decided. Bar & Bench reported the PIL outcome, as did LiveLaw.

What is known about the FIR’s status?
The latest verified court information in the cited reports is the October 2025 interim stay. The December 15 listing was reported in October, while the January 2026 report concerns the separate PIL. These reports do not establish a later final ruling on the FIR-quashing petitions, whether the stay remains in force, or the current status of any police investigation. Commissioner Sharma’s October 2025 statement that “The probe is still ongoing” described the situation at that time, not necessarily its status now.
