Scroll’s review describes Revathi as an upper-caste engineering graduate ostracized by her family after an abusive love marriage to a lower-caste auto driver. That account adds the sharper social context to the publisher’s outline: Revathi’s relationship is not only a family disagreement, but also a point where caste and class hierarchies shape how she is treated.
What social questions does the novel raise?
The publisher frames the novel around the ways caste, class and misogyny enter family and social life. The hospital setting brings those pressures into close focus: relatives confront the consequences of Revathi’s situation, while the story considers vulnerability and the limits of individual choice.
#1 Best Overall
Reviewer Basudhara Roy reads the novel in Scroll as a conflict between individual and society, and between heart and head. That is one critical lens, rather than a single formula for the book’s meaning. Its social stakes emerge through Revathi’s circumstances and the varied reactions around her.
What is the Tamil original and who translated it?
A Woman Burnt is the English translation of Imayam’s Tamil novel Sellatha Panam. GJV Prasad translated the English edition. Scroll reports that the Tamil original received the 2020 Sahitya Akademi Prize.
Rank #2
Reviewers offer different impressions of what carries across between the languages. Scroll notes that the English prose retains aspects of Tamil syntax and rhythm. Mint reviewer Indumathy Sukanya, by contrast, considers some of the original’s sharp retorts and profanity less forceful in English. These are reviewers’ assessments of tone, not a settled measure of the translation.
