April May 99 is set in 1999 because director Rohan Mapuskar wanted to place its childhood story at a hinge between decades: in a village he remembered before digital devices had become part of everyday life. For him, the year shapes both the film’s period atmosphere and its unhurried portrait of friendship; it is an artistic choice rooted in memory, not a claim about technology use across India.
Why 1999 matters to the story
Mapuskar told Scroll that he wanted to show “the transformation between the decades” and convey “what it was like to live in pre-digital times.” The late-1990s setting gives the film a specific threshold: its characters’ summer unfolds just before the new millennium, in a world the director associates with life before cellphones and digital entertainment were woven into ordinary village routines.

That threshold is more than a date on a title card. It gives Mapuskar a way to evoke a remembered pace of life and to contrast the village of his childhood with the place as he sees it now. As he put it, “There was barely anything like video games. The village was still a village, unlike now.” Those remarks describe his recollection and creative intention; they do not establish how widely particular devices were used in Shrivardhan, or in Indian villages generally, in 1999.
Why the setting is tied to Shrivardhan
The film takes place in Shrivardhan, in Maharashtra’s Raigad district. Its central group includes three 14-year-old friends and Jaie, whose summer vacation becomes the setting for their relationships and discoveries. Mapuskar grew up in Shrivardhan, and says his formative years and school friends informed the story.

That personal connection helps explain why the film’s period and place work together: 1999 is the point in time through which Mapuskar revisits a particular town and the childhood friendships he remembers. He has also clarified that the script is not entirely autobiographical. The film draws on lived experience without presenting every event or character as a direct record of his life.

Mapuskar has said he did not want the young characters’ relationships to center on sexual desire; he wanted to foreground their innocence. In the same interview, he explained: “I didn’t want to go in the direction of sexual desire – I myself knew nothing about sexual matters until I was 16 or so.” The point is his stated approach to the characters, not a general claim about childhood or adolescence.
Film critic Nandini Ramnath offers a related interpretation in her Scroll review, connecting the 1999 setting with “purity, innocence and freedom from the anxieties of the new millennium.” That reading complements Mapuskar’s account: the period can preserve a sense of childhood before the pressures and habits associated with a new era, while the director’s own explanation remains grounded in his memory of pre-digital village life.
Why not set it in another year?
A different year could still support a story about friendship, but it would not carry the same meaning Mapuskar wanted. The close of the 1990s lets him stage a transition between decades, evoke a remembered Shrivardhan before digital devices made their presence felt there, and frame the children’s summer with the innocence he sought to portray. In that sense, 1999 is not simply nostalgic scenery: it is the precise moment that joins the film’s place, the director’s childhood memories and its emotional register.
