Acts of God is Kanan Gill’s debut novel, a comic speculative story that mixes detective fiction with questions about existence, reality and creation. Scroll’s review headline calls it “fun” and “clever”; that is the review’s characterization, not a guarantee of every reader’s reaction.
What is Acts of God about?
The story follows private detective P. Manjunath as he investigates existential cataclysms around the world. Blackstone Publishing’s synopsis traces the disruptions to Dr. Krishna, a scientist in a utopian future who is, in effect, that world’s god. Google Books’ listing for the Indian edition also names Manjunath’s assistant, Heng.

The premise uses comic absurdity to approach philosophical questions. The publisher’s examples include a Danish police officer’s enlightenment, a sentient wall, a troublesome lapel pin, a pill meant to cure the human condition and a worldwide lisp. These are glimpses of the novel’s eccentric conceits, rather than a full account of its plot.
What kind of book is it?
It is a novel, not a memoir or a collection of stand-up material. Its setup brings together detective fiction, speculative science, comic invention and philosophical questions about existence and creation. Blackstone describes it as a “madcap futuristic romp”; that phrase is the publisher’s promotional description, not an independent critical assessment.

Scroll’s headline frames the book as “fun” and “clever.” That wording belongs to the review’s evaluation. The available synopses establish the book’s premise and tone, but do not by themselves support a broader critical consensus or a claim about how every reader will respond.
Which edition should you look for?
Publication year, pagination and ISBN depend on the edition and market. The Indian HarperCollins record and Blackstone’s US print listings are distinct editions, so their page counts should not be treated as conflicting figures for one copy.

The premise may appeal to readers who like speculative stories that use an unusual mystery to explore big questions, especially when the approach is comic rather than solemn. Readers looking for a conventional detective procedural, a factual account of science, or Gill’s stand-up material should note that this is a novel with a deliberately fantastical setup.

Raghu Karnad’s endorsement, reproduced on the Google Books listing, calls it “An audacious daredevil of a book.” That is an attributed endorsement, rather than a substitute for a full review or an account of the whole novel.
